Re: Trying Out Homemade Lizard Skin- $10 Per Gallon

I think I'm going to try the kool seal/micro balloons too. It's cheaper than other stuff. I don't think it can hurt a 30 plus year old truck.

Re: Trying Out Homemade Lizard Skin- $10 Per Gallon

if I can catch enough lizzards, I might try skinning them and glueing their little hides to the floor pan.

Otherwise, I've thought about geting the micro spheres and mixing them in some bed liner material and coating the panels with that. it would be more durable than latex.

I haven't mixed up or sprayed anymore since I last posted. I am happy with how the latex mix sprays out and dampens noise for what it cost. The airspace from the micro balloons would make this stuff great for roof skins and firewalls to minimize heat transfer into the interior. It's much lighter than Dynomat or other stick on sound deadener since it's half air ballons that weigh nearly nothing. That's a huge advantage if you're building a dual purpose track car/daily driver and want to keep weight down as much as possible.

That said, I eventually want to try mixing micro balloons with Kool Seal elastomeric roof coating and see how much better (if any) it is at dampening sound. I would think that the softer coating would absorb vibrations in the metal better and reduce the level of transmitted sound more than latex does.

I'll be trying this in the next couple of weeks!

Do you think dynamat will stick to the latex?

Thanks!

Stick on sound deadener works best when it comes in full contact with the surface it's stuck on. As rough as the texture of this stuff is, I don't think there would be full contact, so there wouldn't be as much benefit from the stick on deadener. It should stick good though, as far as adhesion goes.

Re: Trying Out Homemade Lizard Skin- $10 Per Gallon

While researching the micro sphere additives for the paint I came across this product. Sounds like more along the lines of what we really need for this home made coating.

This looks like a good idea too. I wonder how it would work with a durable paint like urethane enamal? That site states mix with any paint. I also wonder if it could be sprayed with a big tip paint gun? It seems to me like latex would just peel off eventually like it does on the exterior of some houses.
I would love paint the bottom of my cab and be done with it.

You would probably need a really big fluid tip even with the hair sized micro spheres. Not sure the finish quality would be very good with that much fluid volume but it is worth a shot though. I think they might keep the needle tip from closing off the nozzle when you let off the trigger. It could get messy.

I would do a test panel using the high hump tunnel cover and play around. This way you could mix a small amount of paint as a test and not have a tough part to scrape clean if things don't work out.

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but I'm wondering if anyone has actually used this and what kind of results you got. I always like to hear from actual experience. Thanks.

Re: Trying Out Homemade Lizard Skin- $10 Per Gallon

I learned about this from the hot rodders forum a few months ago. Been thinking about it on and off, but had a few questions for those who have done it. How well does it hold up? Does it kill any of the sound on top of the heat barrier? What kind of paint did you use? Can you put any fatmat/dynamat down on top of it? And how many gallons was needed for your reg cab or [preferably] Suburban?

All I did so far was mix it up with some cheap latex paint on spme scrap sheetmetal, and test it in my garage.
