New to Forum and my New 66 GMC

Hey all I been trolling this forum for about a week now since I picked up my 66 GMC c1500. There is a lot of useful and knowledgable people on this forum and I'm stoked I found it. I just picked up a free 66 GMC C1500 Long Fleetside, has leafsprings in rear coils in front and 305e with 4spd. I'm looking at buiding this truck into something of a beast. Just a lot of work ahead of me and trying to figure out where to start. It needs a lot to take care of the rust issues, but the frame is good and the cab is in good shape, bed is also in decent shape just need some dings and dents straitend out. I live in Southeast Alaska right on the Ocean which is the land of rust...I'm a auto mechanic by trade and the mechanical part of the truck don't bother me one bit, but I'm by no means a body guy so getting a little overwhelmed looking at the truck. Anyway just wanted to throw and intro out there and maybe get some good starting advice or general knowledge from the members out there.

Welcome to the forum. Good for you getting it running. It's a lot easier to remain enthusiast about restoring a vehicle when it can move under its own power.

I don't imagine there are many wrecking yards in your area with loads of good condition used parts available. Used fenders in repairable condition are relative easy to find (as well as new reproduction fenders), but doors are a lot harder to come by. They make new reproduction door shells for the 64-66 models, but from what I've read they fit so badly in every direction as to almost be unusable. And they aren't cheap either.

Good luck on your project.

The shop I work at we deal with another shop in Seattle, so I'll look there plus I can get oversized items shipped there and they will put it on a barge for me so I still have accessibility to lower 48 parts

Re: New to Forum and my New 66 GMC

morris....
You seem to have a great start on a nice truck.

You might take some more detailed pics of your rustiest problems....
Most of what I can see from the shots you posted dont seem to be in that bad of shape.
Surface rust can look pretty intimidating at first, but are actually an easy fix compared to patch repairs or panel replacements.

There are quite a few fellas on here that know a bunch....and their opinions are free.

Nice truck....and welcome to the world of "Resurrection"...

I'm looking to make it match my Harley, I have a satin black, super low, tall apes Harley and I'm looking to have a matching set, which is why I like the long bed cause my bike will fit nicely in the back.... So gonna static drop it, probably a 350/th350 combo, satin black... But I wanna add my own flair to it so gonna have to see where my imagination takes me, right now though I am working out the electrical gremlins and trying to stop the rust so I can get a good foundation

Re: New to Forum and my New 66 GMC

Welcome to the group! Glad to see another V6 on here! Mine sat for almost 10 years, with no care whatsoever. Rebuilt the carb, made sure it spun freely, put power to it, and it started. I think it is near impossible to hurt these things!!

There are quite a few Alaska guys on here. Check this out, some of them may be in your area.

Have fun!
