You can use the 48-56 its just a little shorter than the 57-9. The flaming river one I got for my 59 was 29" but you could use upto 32".

Re: what length steering colum do i need

the 55 and 56 have a longer steering column and a flat steering wheel. The 57 to 59 have a shorter column and a deep steering wheel. the reason for the change was that as you were getting out of your 55-56 the ergonomics of that model would cause you to hit the horn button and hok the horn. in 57 the shortened the column and mad the steering wheel deeper so you would not hit the horn button as you exited the vehicle. the difference is about 4 inches. either wheel can be installed on either column but putting a 57-59 wheel on a 55-56 column leaves very little room in the seat.

putting a 55-56 wheel on a 57-59 gives alot of room and for us fat boys makes for alot more room in tha cab..

Re: what length steering colum do i need

The Truck And Car Shop has I Did It columns in their catalog. For '55-'59 they list two, 30" and 32". I would guess like Mike said, if you're going to run a flat wheel, get the longer column. And if you're going to run the dished wheel, get the shorter column.

I used a 32 inch on my 59 but is sub framed. I also raised it higher where it goes
through the firewall.
