Who Want's Pizza?!!

Just put a new set of tires on my '92 K3500. I went with Cooper Discovery ST 255/85-16s and mounted them on some Ford 7" wheels I had, with GMC hubcaps. Now my work truck looks more like a work truck and It will go through mud and snow better. Now,if I only had more work!

I like that look! If I ever wear out my 33/12.50-16.5 BFGs, that's the look I'd like to replace them with. Good old tall & skinnies!

Re: Who Want's Pizza?!!

Those are great tires Tim. You’ll like them. I ran those exact Cooper ST 255/85R16’s on that 2005 HD truck I fixed and flipped a few years ago. Ran them for 10,000 miles before I sold the truck and they still looked like new.

They chop through the snow sooo much better than the fat 285's on the 2001 HD

Re: Who Want's Pizza?!!

I've had one set of 255/85s before, but they were Kelly AWRs. The rest of the time I've run 285/75s in BFG A/Ts,Kelly AWRs,and lastly Uniroyal Laredo AWTs. This is the only 4wd I ever ran mild tires on. The Coopers aren't exactly wild, but definitely M&S,right Larry? Let's see what winter brings this year. Steve, are you running 255/85s now? If so,what brand?

Re: Who Want's Pizza?!!

Oh yeah, any 8-lug outer nub-type hubcap fits any 8-lug outer nub-type wheel with same lug pattern. Ford was first to screw up the lug pattern by going metric, which was '96,from what I understand. But,hubcaps would still fit those wheels. GM is now metric and I assume they have the same 170mm pattern.

Re: Who Want's Pizza?!!

Yeah the rims looked like old 70s to me kinda cool the hub caps fit them.I knew the 8 lug was the same for a long time but ford did other dumb things like the dana 50 and changing the dana 60 to ball joints in 92.

Ya, I'm running siped Toyo MT's from Les Schwab in the E range on 8" wide Teflon coated Mojaves. I prefer 255/85's on 7" wide but these are working fine.

The Toyo's are tough and last decently. The MT's do have some rolling resistance which drags my mileage down about 1mpg over their AT's, but for how and what I use the truck for I prefer the more aggresive lug.

Re: Who Want's Pizza?!!

Looks just right. I'd like my '72 GMC to look like that. I've had 12.50/37-16.5 Super Swamper SSRs and 8.25" OEM wheels and +6" springs, that were for a SWB 1t Stepside project I never did. I've intended to put all that on my '72 just to use. I'd rather not go quite so big but figure use them up and I can always go to less lift and this size tire when they wear out. I'd never get enough money for all that to make worth selling. I want to build bumpers and install a winch, too.
Not sure how much longer I'll be running the '92. In '08 when I put the Uniroyals on I said that was the last set I'd be buying the good ole truck...but was wrong. I figure these tires could end up on my '72 or the next work truck...probably an 03-07.

Re: Who Want's Pizza?!!

Ya, this one has 2" EZ rides all around with an extra inch block in the rear and top mounted overloads. It's sits nice with this tire/wheel combo and handles a decent load. Infact last time I towed the 5th wheel I hit the scales a tic under 20,000 lbs without it squating too bad.

I considered the SSR in the 35/10.50r16 before but i couldn't justify the cost for a 10,000 mile tire. They are just too soft for much pavement driving.

I'm flatbeding this truck next spring/summer so this rear bumper will get sold. Most likely i will have to cut the fender gaurds off unless someone wants to set there's up this way too. They are load bearing and not skimpy.

Re: Who Want's Pizza?!!

I hear ya on the life of an SSR. And,I like the flatbed idea. I had them (285s) on a '95 work truck...with utility bed and diesel...2 sets. They went more like 20k,but that ain't long at all and, yes!,very expensive. I think I'll be taking that 6" lift out in a couple/few years. I don't drive it a whole terrible lot. I also have a set of 12.50/35 BFG A/Ts on aluminum slots to switch back & forth to. I need to use this stuff before the tires go bad! In the long run,I want side bins on a Stepside bed or a low-profile utility bed. I want it to be like the trucks I always had,w/o the mondo tires anymore. Just "enhanced" over stock works for me.

Re: Who Want's Pizza?!!

I'm with you guys. I really wish that the major manufacturers would just make a 35x10.5 or equivalent. I keep getting tempted to buy the ssr's but I'm afraid of the high cost, low life span and alleged irregularities.

Re: Who Want's Pizza?!!

ya, those 285's do balloon a little. what side wall rating are those?

i feel so confident staying with 255's that i am willing to invest in a set of studded chains.

here's a poor picture of the rear of mine with air pressure at 50lbs in the 255's, the camper loaded, and about another 700lbs in the bed.

hope this link works

it's tough to find real aggressive chains for 255/85's.

Re: Who Want's Pizza?!!

The 285s are right on 7-8" wheels. Last time I checked into 285/75 vs 255/85 I found the 285s had lower ratings. That may have changed. Here's a '71,then an '85 with the 7" Ford wheels and 285s.
