Did Automatic Shifter Linkage Ever Change 73-80?

I'm in the middle of a body swap, 73 C20 that had a 350 trans, on a 79 3/4 4x4 frame with a 400 trans. I used the linkage from my 73 (the 2 wheel drive)....
My shifter linkage is hitting the spring hangers, I've never encountered this problem before and had always assumed they were all the same, regardless of 2x4, 4x4, 350 or 400 trans. Is the 73 linkage different??
