Bleeding Brakes

Do auto mechanics bleed the brakes through the hose connection to avoid the bleeder screw. I'm asking this because I had all the brake lines on my 2003 replaced and much later on I found an unusable bleeder screw. My thought is they didn't ruin the screw I think they bleed the lines from the hose connection and didn't want to deal with the bleeder which they should have replaced it if it was so bad. I did remove it myself after some work.
