14bff how tight should it be...

How tight should the nut which holds the hub to the spindle be on a 14bff? When I spun it out of there it was pretty loose, when I spun it back in I snuged it by hand then tightened it to the next keyway opening. It does not appear to be binding but thought I'd ask....

The real issue with this is your use of the word "nut"....as in only one?
If so, that is a problem. There should be a 3-piece locking nut/ring sytstem.
It is very similar to the front set-up.

Some use one large lock nut with a key in the key way to hold it in.

Either way, I tighten the lock nut in, spinning the hub the entire way. Tighten until I can't turn any more then back off a half turn.

I have never seen one like that. Every one I have worked on has been the double hex nut with the bending flange/washer between them, or the round type with the notches and the pin washer.
I honestly don't remember which were on which brand. It has been years since I worked at that shop and we worked on all makes of trucks.

But yeah, tightening while turning and then backing off a half turn or so is fine.

The later model 14B's have them. One lock washer, a key to go into the spindle keyway and one large lock nut to hold it all in place.

All the Dana axles I've seen use the double nut method.

I have the one with a keyway. I tighten while spinning the hub then went the 1/8th of a turn TIGHTER to get it to the keyway... I guess I'll open her up and back it off a bit....
