Stereo speaker location suggestions

I am looking for any suggestions as to where I can mount some stereo speakers in my '70 C10.

PO mounted them in cutout on the driver and passenger side kick panel walls (see photo). Unfortunately I do not believe there is enough depth to mount some decent 5 1/4 sized speakers. I tried the plastic molded kick panel speakers from Brothers but the speaker sticks out too far and it interferes with the parking brake when depressed. I thought about installing in the door panels on the bottom metal area below the upholstered door panels.? My gas tank is still behind seats so no room there....Any thoughts?

dont cut your doors , I dont use my vents , so I got 5x7s and put them were the vents were , I used these behind them

I use then molded ABS kick panel pods. To get my parking brake to clear the speaker, I simply removed the pedal from the arm and re-welded the pedal back on farther to the right. I had to modify the rubber pad and metal trim a little to fit back over the pedal, but it looks stock and works great. BTW, I added a little triangular brace under the pedal to give it more support because the arm is now pretty much under the left edge of the pedal.

I 2nd that. Don't cut the doors.

I'm pretty frustrated that my doors have a badly cut speaker hole in each of them.

I like the vent idea and have considered that myself.

I've also seen them squeezed up in the dash...depends how you have your duct work in and what you've got for a glove box.

never thought about putting 6x9's in the vent holes and just not using them. Of course, I just finished removing the vent doors out and installed new gaskets but haven't reinstalled them yet. How did you finish the kick panels...carpeting? plastic covers? Possible to send me a picture? I'd like to see how it looks! Thanks for good idea!

I'm curious...why would you recommend not to install in doors?

Don't cut the bottoms of the doors, but do cut the door PANELS. This is a great place to install speakers as they are up higher and if you change your mind, a new door panel hides the install. Or even better, but repro plastic panels and cut them for the speaker saving your originals. Here is a link to my write up:

Except 72 repro panels are a bad fit, better to find another stock set and mod one or the other, then replace later if needed.

Actually, '72 is the exception and not just for quality of repro part since the panel is not flat. In my '72 Jimmy I made 1/4" plywood panels covered with vinyl and used 67-71 armrests instead of the integral '72 parts.

But he said his truck was a '70 so good to go. Either way, this is the most cost effective and cleanest way to install a sound system that is minimally invasive and easily covered up if you want to revert to stock.
