Some clean up

Hey guys I am doing some clean up on my engine bay. 1979 frame off completed in may. Have about 2000 miles on her and I have oil leaks in the front. I thought the gasket for the power stealing was loose but looking now I'm not sure. What do you guys think

Re: Some clean up

My water pump seemed a little loose. Do you think this mess could be a result of a loose pump?

Re: Some clean up

You mean the front of that engine was clean and orange 2000 miles ago? It doesn't look like fresh oil to me, it looks like old baked on oil to me. I can't see much silicone at the end of the intake manifold. Fresh oil should be easy enough to see. Those stains just don't look like fresh oil leaks to me. I traced down oil leaks on 2 of my vehicles last summer and I was wiping fresh oil off of shiny Chevy Orange paint and the leaks were easy to see.

Re: Some clean up

It wipes off. Mostly dirt. There was no sealer on my water pump bolts. It was fresh orange 2000 miles ago. Not baked on.

Re: Some clean up

If the cam shaft seal leaked wouldn't it be contained in the timing cover?

Re: Some clean up

My friend said it might be the pump failing. Not leaking. Thoughts?

Just a thought and my prior experience.
If it's leaking at the camshaft seal, when it spins it will also spin a little bit of oil out and dust or dirt stick to it and SOMETIMES creates that pattern.
I'm just putting it out there for you to check. If you clean it off and drive it for a day you should be able to find it.
Good luck.

Re: Some clean up

Btw to be safe check to see if there is any type of oil or coolant on the cross member under the engine that may help.

Re: Some clean up

said wipes off mostly dust, could the balancer or something not be pulled down all the way, making the belts run out of alignment and wearing off the edges creating the dust?

Re: Some clean up

Leaking fan clutch?

Front crank bearing seal? Is the back of the balancer oil stained?

Any kind of oil or transmission cooler on the front?

Re: Some clean up

Trans cooler is in the radiator. Not separate. Clutch is clean.

Re: Some clean up

I could see that being belt dust like junkman said. Fresh oil should be more wet looking. This looks like maybe a slight oil spray with some kind of dirt/dust in it. I keep checking in to see what the solution was. All you can do is clean it up and check it more often until you can find the fresh stuff coming out.

Re: Some clean up

I am thinking it got a little wet from the water pump being loose and the bolts a little loose and the fact my pulleys were freshly painted and new belts that created the dirt/dust. All cleaned up and looks brand new now. Radiator out hoping to drop it off for repair today. Will keep you posted.
