71 Finally done!

Here is my project that is the culmination of a long two years of hard work, I present the Surfburbon! It started out as a 1971 Arizona survivor and I transformed it into a restomod. Original paint striped down to bare metal on the entire vehicle via 4” grinder. I did all the body work up to the last primer coat and was able to hand it off to painter to apply base color + flattened clear coat. Way too much hand sanding! Car boasts 350 HO small block, 700r4 overdrive transmission, suspension all new and lowered 3”, AC, cruise, leather captains chairs w heat and power, solid teak wood cargo area and much more.

Re: 71 Finally done!

Looks great! nice job and I'm sure the pleasure of now being able to enjoy it makes all the hard work worth it. It's difficult to tell what color it is, that first pic is pretty dark. More exterior shots please.

Re: 71 Finally done!

Thanks, I do appreciate it! The color is a sea foam green and really looks different under varied light conditions, may be affected a bit by the flattened clear coat. Here are two more exterior photos under different light.

The top photo in the wooded area is how the truck appears when you see it, the second photo is near sunset so the light is much warmer.

Re: 71 Finally done!

Congrats on a really fine build!

What size rims are you running (Looks like 18s maybe?)

I like that you broke convention on some of the mods you did (I.E. wood laminate flooring in back, Captain's chairs, etc.). Very unique and be-fitting of the beach burb theme!

Hope you have tons of fun with it now!

Re: 71 Finally done!

Wheels are 20 x 8.5 with 255 45/20 tires. For some reason, maybe due to it being lowered, they don't look like 20's

Nicely done, I like the color choice.

I am interested in more on how you completed the rear wood floor.....

Re: 71 Finally done!

I originally bought enough rubber diamond plate to do the entire interior floor. Plans change. Got the idea to do the wood floor but wanted to keep the cash output low. Went to my local Lumber Liquidators and told them what I was up to and that I was not locked into a specific wood. They asked me if I could wait around a while and they got one of their staff use tow motor to bring down a pallet full of seconds and damaged boxes. I figured I needed around 30 sq. ft. which meant 2 boxes of their flooring that are around 20 sq. ft. Found this solid teak, hard as all heck and bought two boxes for about 30% of their original price, they just wanted to get it out of their store since they only had two boxes and there were boards in their that were not useable. For the install I laid fat mat on the entire floor and installed it just like you would inside your house except I used hand held nail gun. Made cardboard patterns for wheel well, spare tire and gas filler tube. Routed the edges any of the end boards. Was a pretty cheap project and the teak looks just awesome against the green and black. I kept a matt of the rubber diamond plate to cover the wood if I need to haul anything.

Re: 71 Finally done!

Very Nice! Love the wood bed in the cargo area. I have been looking at options for doing this and even contacted Bruce Horkey's wood and parts for ideas. This looks killer and should be a quick and affordable project. What did you use for the ends? Traditional transition pieces that matched the flooring? Is it just laminate, or did you go for actual wood? Did you glue the whole thing down? Or just do a "floating floor" and glue the perimeter? Have you seen any noticeable expansion/contraction of the flooring? Sorry for all the questions, lol!

Re: 71 Finally done!

This is real solid teak hardwood, not cheap laminate but you could use that. If you went the laminate route you would have to use a solid wood for the ends and edges however. My end boards are just normal tongue and groove pieces that have been ripped down to remove tongue then i rounded the edges over with a router. The teak was a pain to saw and route since it was such a hard wood, could have used a newer saw blade! Boards that are located above the original plywood in the bed area are nailed with an air nailer trough the groove so no nails show.
