Project Stupid Move - A rebuild for the Boy

For those of you that've followed along on my '67 build thread, the Boy should be a familiar face. You all also know that he's poured his soul into doing the V8 swap into his 1988 S10. He did an NV3500 five speed, 11" clutch and he's got the open diff welded up. The actual conversion was completed several weeks ago but the darn thing would just never run quite right. Last Friday we finally got it sorted out. The timing set didn't get installed right and the cam was WAY advanced. That was an easy fix and the thing flat-out hustles now! Well it did. You see, I was a little worried about how juicy the thing might be, not wanting him to get hurt or anything, so I took for a spin down the road......LITERALLY. I stabbed the gas coming around the corner for home, got TOTALLY sideways, corrected to the steering stops but it was over. I ran it into the ditch hard and wiped the smile right off it's face. Toasted the whole clip and bent the frame. What a D-Bag!! Soooo I thought I'd share my attempt at redemption here. I've already worked a deal with a buddy that's got a frame rack and hope to have it on there this coming weekend. I'll be searching for sheet metal this week. Looks like I'll get my shot at a paint job before I get the C10 ready.

Re: Project Stupid Move - A rebuild for the Boy

Ya, lot's of donors at the local bone-yard. I can prolly get the clip and a bumper for under $150. I plan on having the insides black and the outsides in primer before we even get the frame straightened. There's a bunch of little dingers that we'll address too but at least he'll be able to drive for a while before the snow flies.
The little bugger was bummed to say the least. I was like the walking dead feeling so bad about it and he tells me "Don't worry about it Johnny. $hit happens."

That's a terrible feeling when you realize you've gone sideways beyond the point of NO RETURN! That's just about what happened to me the first time unhooked the ponies on my 5.3 conversion. I spun completely around in the road and never hit anything. I had to change my shorts when I got home. Lookin Good it'll be back on the road soon.

Re: Project Stupid Move - A rebuild for the Boy

Around here s10's are dirt cheap. Theres a little blazer for $750 right around the corner. Would prolly take 500 easy.,

For a tad bit more than what you'll spend on straightening the frame and sheet metal and all the other un-for-seens wouldn't it almost be easier to get another victim,,.?.,,er, ah.,.s10? just my .02

Toss all the goodies in the new one and Go

Glad to hear ya didn't get any bumps or bruises.

Projects can wait when putting family first.
That is a sign of a great dad. Glad that I got to meet you.

Re: Project Stupid Move - A rebuild for the Boy

If I were paying full-pop for the frame work it might be a wash. I think I'll get that work done for next to nuthin so hopefully it only sets me back a few hundred before paint and I can get it rolling in another week. If I can get it back on the road then make it shiny this winter I think he'd forgive me.

Re: Project Stupid Move - A rebuild for the Boy

Appreciate you sayin that man! I scored a hood, fenders, hinges and a valance over the last couple days. My pal is "pretty sure" he'll get it on the rack for us this weekend. I'm going to clean up the shop a little and git to sandin tonight after work. Pics to follow. Still sniffin for a good bumper.

Re: Project Stupid Move - A rebuild for the Boy

Got that f-ucker sandid', on it's azz and branded, it's brown....

Cracks me up man! You sang that song back in the day on my build thread and it really stuck. Whenever I'm out there lookin at the heap the rhythm starts.

So I got all the panels from the bone yard last week and this morning we gave them all a good scrubbing with brushes and detergent. The fenders were OG paint and I can tell ya, I got no issues leaving most of that on there. We feathered all the rock chips out, had a couple tiny filler spots and they look great. The hood was re-sprayed but nice. It was a BC/CC metallic but no question, it just peeled off as compared to the OG paint on the fenders. Boy was pretty impatient when it came to the sandin. He's like "eff it Johnny, let's paint the beotch so I can drive it!" I scrubbed my fingers to the bone then shot them with polyester primer. While that was setting up we ripped the clip off. The "good-guy" frame straightening deal went sideways but we did a bunch of measuring and the frame is good to the cross member. Looks like it's just the horns that got TWEAKED! Core support is straight and the inners are good. We're headed to the pine tree with our logging gear and a come along in the morning and will get it back where it oughtta be. I grabbed a quart of that Van Sickle tractor paint labeled "Rustic Brown". The chip looked pretty good but the way it layed out I'd liken it more towards "Dog-Shat Brown". Boy is happy so I'm happy! More updates tomorrow!

Edit...
We taped off the exterior of the panels. The DS Brown is just the engine compartment and door jambs.

Re: Project Stupid Move - A rebuild for the Boy

Bahahahaha! Looks great guys! I've done 2 front Enders on those. The horns bend if you breathe on them. Not for nuthin, I've literally cut them off, bolted them to the bumper, mocked it up and tacked them back on. Worked like a bandit if you're good at the core support. Keep it up guys!

Re: Project Stupid Move - A rebuild for the Boy

This morning we were thinking we were geniuses! Rigged it up to the pine tree with the tractor on the other side and yanked it sideways till it was ( . )( . ) 35" OC. Hauled it back into the shop and started hanging fenders. WHOA! Core support is WAY high. We tried riggin six ways to Sunday to try and pull them horns down and just could not get them. We SCREWED the bumper brackets and finally just cut them off to be straightened back out then re-welded on later. We had a six foot, 2-1/2" pipe jammed in there and mashed down with the tractor bucket till I was worried I'd break something. Not even sure where it's really bent. Boy ain't no doctor but he's running out of patients so we put it back together best we could so he could drive it. It's driveable but it still sucks! We're taking to a profesh body shop for a quote while I lean on my "pal" for a real-deal frame alignment. Got it wrapped up just in time for chow. As soon as we got it fired I was like "you should let me drive". What a f-ukin laugh we had. I didn't drive. The thing flat-out hauls azz!!! I'm a little worried about that Boy!

Re: Project Stupid Move - A rebuild for the Boy

Well, worries confirmed. First day he drives the truck to school since it's run worth a damn and he gets into a smack-talkin deal with a kid driving a turbo Toyota sumthin. $10 bet results in a BIG FAT TICKET. Radar shows 105 but that was after he schmucked the Yota and they were slowing down. The Yota bolted resulting in some high-speed chase thing. Truck is parked, Wife is SPEWIN pissed and we don't know if we'll have insurance next week. To be continued, in less than a year we hope....

John, Insurance don't know yet. Do you all have "amended" fines/penalties? Call an Atty, ask around. Mine made a 67 in a 25 and 73 in a 45 go away. Wasn't cheap, but kept the Ins. guys away.

If he would have been here in Iowa they would take his license for a year for Drag Racing. 6 months of walking for the ticket he has there, plus SR22 insurance for 3 years. It's a hard lesson to learn but it's one you don't forget. Good luck with your insurance company, By the way I learned these lessons at the School Of Hard Knocks myself.

Re: Project Stupid Move - A rebuild for the Boy

There's a little twist to the story. See, back when he first got his truck he got a ticket for 10 over. They have a program here called Alive at 25. For a hundred bucks he took a class (didn't learn much) and they waived the ticket as long as he didn't get another one in 12 months. I think he's just shy. Because he stopped for the rolling lights and was cooperative, while the other knucklehead bolted, the cop cut him a little slack by not throwing the book at him. Could have been negligent or reckless, or prolly a few other things. I'll wake this thread back up once he's got his ducks in a row again. For now it's parked behind the shop.

Got a day in driving school, $2550 ticket and the judge stood up, Pointed his finger at me and said," If I so much as see you in my court room in the next 6 months you'll do a week of community service"!, "DO I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR"!!!

My insurance didn't go down til I got hitched and turned 25

I had an attorney and it was money WELL spent. Get an attorney to represent. my .02
