under dash ashtray ( for an AC c10 ), discussion

i have been wondering and been searching for the percentages of c10 that had them. i heard and read up on article(s) that they, are like a 1/4 of truck sale(s) that had them. dont know its true or not. but i would say, this is the site to ask regarding the option ( i guess you can say ) ....

also seeing at what is the going market for one of them .... ?

I think of it this way. Most of these trucks were sold to farmers and tradesmen. Most didn’t have the $ for fancy stuff like ac or power steering or v8.
I would guess that # to be very low. Factory ac wasn’t installed in the factory until 65 or 66.
It was all dealer added.

Factory AC option for 1966 was nowhere near 25%. More like 2% of trucks built, and even less in 1965 since I think it was a mid-year addition.

Considering dealers could supply aftermarket A/C units and you rarely see even them , I would not think there were many factory equipped trucks. Perhaps if you consider that the people who were able to spend the extra 10% cost , could also have garages to preserve them.

for 1965 9,866 received AIR on the assembly line. That's 2% . I would assume it was up slightly in 1966 as it does seem a little more common for 66. Dealers could also install the AC units so that ups the number a bit.

Re: under dash ashtray ( for an AC c10 ), discussion

I'd be curious to know how many kits were sold in 1964 and dealer-installed on the 1964 trucks. My '64 was a dealer-installed A/C truck. Because everything on the firewall had to be cut free-hand by the installer, you should have seen the holes I had to fix when I body worked and painted the firewall.

I bought the truck for $200 about 6 years ago from a guy who was planning to scrap it. No engine, and the body was beat to death. But, it had all the hard-to-get A/C parts AND the underdash ashtray. I never mentioned to the seller that the ashtray was worth more than what he sold me the entire truck for. After seeing so many good, rebuildable 60-66 trucks getting scrapped by people with no regard for saving old trucks, I refused to let that poor truck go to the scrap yard to get crushed. After a bunch of work, I'm pretty close to getting it back on the road.
