Re: My 1st truck pull

If you do run the shorter tires, 1st high might be worth a try. It usually takes at least a mild big block to tear out the coupler. Keep an eye out for a mid 80's 465/205 combo- they don't run a coupler. Super stout. Put a button clutch & 1-1/4" input shaft in & you should be good to about 700HP. But then you will need a 60 in the front...

It was easier on parts back when they ran mechanical sleds. Modern drag race sleds with grouser pans are hard on parts.

It's all for fun, and worth every penny

Re: My 1st truck pull

You must have been reading my mind. I have already thought about building another mild 427 and putting one of my extra 60's under the front.

Re: My 1st truck pull

I will have a video later tonight. I put a solid lifter cam in it and went with stock 8 inch rims and factory hubcaps. I like the trad pattern on the Cooper tires. They ended up being the same height as the other set i had so I am going to stay in low range second gear.

Re: My 1st truck pull

I have 2 of em one with 4.56 trac loc and 1 with 4.11 trac loc. Wasn't able to pull Tuesday night because my clevis was too small. The pull ended up being on monday night for my class but bad advertisement had more trucks show up. 5 total showed up but I was the only gas. I asked a couple of the smokers (Dodge)if I could borrow there clevis after they pulled and they were ok with that. But two trucks that showed up didn't pull as far as I did at Terre Haute and didn't want to cooperate after another guy brought it to there attention. Pretty bad when 30,000 dollar trucks don't want my 3,000 gasser to pull against them.

Don't you just love guys like that? Keep your eye on them. If you are not around your truck at ALL times when at a pull, they will jack your clevis, disengage a lockout, screw out a tire core, dump beer in your gas tank...

It sucks that you have to worry about that, I thought it was just a fun competition, apparently others don't feel the same way.

Re: My 1st truck pull

No matter how well you are liked or known, someone will want to mess with you. And they are good at it. Always ready with an excuse. You might find your weights, floor jack, cooler, etc in the back of their truck at the end of the night. They won't even act surprised that you found it there. They will just blame it on someone else claiming they are trying to stir trouble.

Seen it before, and again, and again

Re: My 1st truck pull

We'll I read the paper tonight and found another pull about 35 miles from me in Chrisman Illinois on the 24th. I am pumped to see what she will do. Once I get the valves adjusted I will get the video I promise plus the next pull.

Re: My 1st truck pull

Good luck there Troy Built, years ago I pulled a stock 69 k20, I was told then by the local pullers to go low side 2nd and have tires at 20 lbs. This past year I have bought a 67 K20 and a 69 K20, both are stock other than the 69 has a late model engine. I have plans to pull them both in my area come September.

Re: My 1st truck pull

Even though it needs painted it draws alot of attention. I hear alot of people commenting that, "you have to watch those ole trucks" and I just sit back and laugh. If there are any pulls around Central Indiana or Illinois this year let me know. I will travel a little ways to pull before it's over.

Re: My 1st truck pull

OK here's my tips to you:

- 30 lbs rear tires
- 12 to 15 lbs front tires
- block the rear suspension, however you like.
- Move as much weight forward as possible!!!!
- Gear it to hit the limits of your engines bottom end
- Don't dump the clutch...ease it out to limit the Bounce factor
- Tires won't matter until you have the power to make it a factor (600+)

If you get the bug to move up a class, then you will see that no matter what the pulling sites say......set-up IS important, but POWER and TRACTION is what wins!!!!

A.........

Re: My 1st truck pull

Sorry about not having a video this time but, I pulled Wednesday night. I got third again but I was pissed about the new tires I used. I could tell from the get go I was spinning out too much. I dropped the rears to 32 and the fronts to 25 pounds. The motor did fine started at about 4000 and stood on it at about 50 feet. It turned 5400 at 50 feet and spun out at 5000 rpms. I thought I went the wrong direction on tires till I found out that I had both front tires in the air at the 170 foot mark. Like I said I wish I had video. I know I need more front end weight but It would have still been cool on video. I pull again Saturday night and I will have video unless it sucks By the way third payed 100 bucks. I am now dead even on expenses for entry fees.
