Re: 67-72 front crossmember VS squarebody

Not that they are easy to come by but makes a guy wonder if the V6 crossmember would hold an LS. If I recall the V6 was only in GMC?

Re: 67-72 front crossmember VS squarebody

The front passenger side of the crossmember wasabout 1/8" high. I seen where another member just cut and bent down the crossmember. I just thought about adding a piece of 1/8" flat stock

You know now that I think about it. My grandfather had a old gmc with a v6. And he used to say how mean it was. It was when I was very small. I think any crossmember would hold any motor. The crossmembers just hold the frame together. Not support the engine. Well for me and my way of thinking anyways.
Good stuff.
So that crossmember would only be in 4x4 gmc v6??? Probably not to many compared to the other configurations

correct but if the crossmember gets in the way then you get to do all the fun stuff you are doing now!

I havent researched it but I dont ever recall a Chevy V6 of this vintage so as to how rare I dunno.

Re: 67-72 front crossmember VS squarebody

The GMC v6 is hard to get parts for. I found a cotter pin and a rock in 2 of the cylinders, so needless to say the walls were very scored. I would have spent 900+ on custom oversize pistons, so I got an 8.1L out of a 2002 for a steal instead. Thinking of buying the diy4x motor mounts and seeing if this crossmember and mounts will work.

Re: 67-72 front crossmember VS squarebody

I ordered the diy4x Ls motor mounts for the square bodies. I haven't had a chance to see if it would work. Please post up some pictures if you can.
Keep us posted.

Portalaxls, That looks like the crossmember my pickup had. It was originally a 292 straight six

Re: 67-72 front crossmember VS squarebody

This is front picture. The mounts and crossmember are not bolted in yet. I had to move the crossmember forward than I was expecting. But it clears nicely. I will take pictures when bolted in.

Re: 67-72 front crossmember VS squarebody

Do you think you'll need to modify the right front corner of the crossmember or shim it some more to match the frame rail since you had to move it all forward?

Brett,
Not sure what you mean about shimming? are you talking about the crossmember where it sits in the frame rail??? like the area I added the 1/8" plate?

Right know I have it about center of the frame and level side to side. I need to check front to back before I can mark and drill the holes.

Zach that is an Off-Road Design Steering box brace. It is needed on the old frames after years of abuse(my frame front crossmember rivets were loose and I had to replace them with new grade 8 bolt as you can see in the picture.) or if you plan to run a larger tire. Crossover steering would also be good but for me it would be overkill.

Steering brace

Yes, exactly where you had added the 1/8" plate.

Re: 67-72 front crossmember VS squarebody

Well I am going to put a 1" spacer between the crossmember and the pedestals to clear the oil pan in case I need to remove it without removing the motor. If I needs adjust I will post it.

Re: 67-72 front crossmember VS squarebody

Ok so more to come with this 73-87 crossmember idea..... I found a problem when trying to keep the motor in the correct location front to back, side to side it fits great.
A section of the crossmember almost hits the corner of the oil pan where the bolt that holds the crossover wiring under the crank pulley. It will have to be clearance'd. I will try and explain soon.

This is how much I had to clearance. Now I can even use the factory wiring harness cross over loom. I forgot to take a picture after the motor was installed.
