Re: 89 instrument cluster swap

If you had a cluster from a 91 it would be easier. They have the same style connector as the 89. 94 will have a different connector. I did the 91 to 89 swap a few months ago and it works fine, just have to move three wires and add one for the tacometer. The automatic part really has nothing to do with how the cluster works. Make sure you get the DRAC module from the 94 as well. There is a write up on this forum, just don't have the link handy.

Re: 89 instrument cluster swap

I have a couple 91 tach clusters (85 MPH - No 454SS Tach Clusters) in the garage. I think one is for a 6 cylinder and one is for a V8 - I can't tell anymore because the sticker on the 6 cyl cluster fell off. I also have a couple re-programming kits each one with 1 or 2 of the re-programming clips. PM me if interested.

Here is what to change on your 89 to make a 91 Tach cluster work: (Taken from nother thread.) See this site: http://www.koolcartoons.com/lowdown/...91cluster.html

7. Disassemble the programmer plug
Remove the white plastic teeth that lock the pins into the plug housing. Push one white pin into the plug from the other side (cluster side) to unlock and remove one wire and connector pin.

8. Open the truck’s inst. panel plug...
Using the white pin, move the following wires.
Move B15 to B11,
Move A10 to A9,
Move A11 to A10.
Install the wire and pin assy. previously removed from the programmer plug into B15.
Route a long wire through the firewall to the coil for tach sense pick-up. Hook this wire to the one you added to pin B15. Try going through the grommet for the cruise control harness.
The black slit corrugated wire wrap is now available at Radio Shack to make the added wire look factory installed.

9. The plug is numbered 1-17. Face the plug with the female ends facing you and the round alignment pins to the top and B1 will be on the left of the plug.

Question Re: 89 instrument cluster swap

Question?
I have an 89 Cheyenne that has the speedometer and gas gauge only. I just bought a cluster from an 88 that has all the gauges. I know that I will have to get an oil and temp sender. Besides that, is it a plug and play swap? Is there anything else I should know?
