62 c10 starting troubles

I have been having lots of trouble starting my truck. I pulled the starter every thing was all good, put it back on and didn't work. The ignition key is getting good power. When the key is turned half way there is good power at the solenoid. But when I try to start It just makes a strange noise. Watch the video: http://youtu.be/f5mf9ozbQEI thanks.

Re: 62 c10 starting troubles

It sounds like you have a low battery or a dirty or loose connection on one of the battery cables. Also, have you tried using a screwdriver to jump the terminals at the starter and bypass the ignition switch?

Re: 62 c10 starting troubles

Is there a fuseable link, or resistor wire from starter to key? That was my issue. Run a plain wire to key from s from starter. Point style original style wires, loom not spark plug, will reduce voltage to coil as not to fry points.

I'm not sure about '62, but 63-66 use a resistance wire.

I'll check tomorrow. But I tested for power and I was getting 12.7 volts at the ignition switch

Re: 62 c10 starting troubles

Pull your connector at inside engine bay where engine harness goes to starter and clean terminals with electrical contact cleaner. Coat contacts with diaeletric grease when you put back together. check your crimp terminals at the starter and make sure their tight and clean. Check your body ground straps. The one at bellhousing bolt to firewall is the most important on your truck and usually the first to get left off by PO. 50 years of corrosion takes it's toll on the electrical system first. Spray for Gremlins.

Re: 62 c10 starting troubles

From video sounds like low voltage at the starter.

1-Load test battery, confirm it good.
2-Perform volt drops on positive/negative circuits to the battery. Those bolt on connectors at the battery are often problems with corrosion/poor connections.

Good Luck!

Re: 62 c10 starting troubles

Check out Mad Electrical web site. He has a much better design for wiring under hood that gets the full 12 volt to the starter. Horrible design GM did taking power from one side of the truck across the core support. Then all the way inside the cab to through the fuse panel to the key switch. Then out through the fuse panel again then across the firewall to the starter. All through the smallest diameter wire they felt they could use. Read the Tech Tips. Or call him. Mark loves to talk wiring.

Sounds like a bad ground! Check all your grounds.. Battery to engine, engine to frame, frame to cab... etc..

Thanks for all the help guys! I took your advice and pulled off all the terminals and connections and soaked them in baking soda and water and then cleaned with a wire brush. Put it all back together and it works

Sorry, just saw this. Jump from batt terminal to the s with ignition on to engage the starter. If you use a screwdriver or something similar be careful not to touch the starter housing or any other metal around. If using a jumper wire be sure to pull it off when engine starts.

Re: 62 c10 starting troubles

Thanks..I'll utilize this info.........I have been replacing my under hood wiring ...one wire at a time....and back to original color....pretty sure it was completed properly....Then....I must have overlooked something.....I'm getting nothing when the key is engaged.....I did disconnect the firewall junction block ( next to heater Box )......and reconnected after a mild cleanup.....maybe that the disconnect......
