Nooooooooooooo you should NOT add a metallic additive to the paint..rustoleum paint is not that same as Auto Paint...
Auto Paints that have a metallic in them are not Opaque like the rustoleum paint jobs done here....you need a more Transparent or translucent color so the metallic additive will show through....you would have to add a 50/50 rustoleum and Clear and then add a metallic additive....and after all that you might as well just buy a REAL auto paint
Keep it simple!!!! dont over think it

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

ol_skool,

Your trucks look nice!

I actually liked the faded patina of my truck better than shiny paint....maybe I should have painted it with a satin.....???? Oh well....

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

he is saying in his white rustoleum paint if you look at the third pic, the plastic is not covering too well either. I still haven't gotten around to adding that pearl,to rustoleum but gonna do it, just to see how it turns out. Gonna use a dark color, black maybe. All I've got is time on my hands anyways, lol.

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

that goes back to what I said about spraying the pearl OVER the other ( rustoleum) paint he may have mixed it with clear then let it have it..which would work in therory but I'm not sure how it would stick..it may end up peeling the enamel off??

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

The more I look at the white car, it does look like the pearl is sprayed over. But I am still gonna put some powdered pearl in rustoleum paint just for sh**s and giggles.

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

No NO No NO...he didnt add pearl in his white rustoleum paint. I agree with Hottrucks...He sprayed pearl OVER the top of his white rustoleum paint.
pearls a ment to go OVER the top of color or add to a final coat in a reduced color coat.....metallics are ment to be added to a translucent color

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

I was at Lowes tonight and saw the have gold or silver flakes you can add but I'm not risking it....my plan is to use Buscuit (off white just a bit) and then have the Valspar Industrial tinted to close to the OEM copper... I may hold off a bit we're into the good cruz'n weather now and I don't want to tie the truck up....I'm going to need to pull the glass and door panels and then dive into some body work so I think after turkey day/winter project....

but its nice to know before I dive in COST and where the materials are coming from..on a side note New Hampshire has a VOC law so I can't get it by the gallon ...good thing Vermont is only 9 miles away ..no VOC there Also you can order it online have it shipped to a NON VOC state then bring it back and they will tint it....

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

A true pearl is a separate coat that's sprayed between the base coat (color) and the clear. This is called a 3-stage paint.

A lot of people confuse mica with pearl. Mica is a powder that you can add, much like metallic addatives, only the particles are considerably smaller. I added orange mica to the red basecoat on car, but I added so little that you really can't even tell. I was afraid to add too much, because when I fooled around with test panels, I found that adding too much, though giving a cool color effect, resulted in a murky, clowdy type of color shift that really didn't thrill me. Likewise, I tried putting the mica in the clear coat, and got similar results when too much was used.

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

Here is my Rustoleum job, its was a quick trow onn paint job not allot of prep but it looks decent from 15 - 20 feet away. Mostly I just want some rust protection.
Before

After

Down the road I may paint it again I am not really liking the shade of the gray. I want more of a darker smoked gray..........but whatever its good enough for now.

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

interesting thread, ive been thinking about doing this to my 65.
how much prep is required/did you guys do? (for those of you who did this)
most just sand it even and flat, not down to bare metal right?
did you guys take panels off then prep and paint or do it with everything still assembled?
hows it look over bondo?

Sand and prep just like any other paint job...the better you do this part, the better the paint job turns out. You can paint over bare metal with Rustoleum. I did minimal masking and left almost all the chrome on. It looks decent over bondo...I've got bondo in the cab corner area and it looks nice. It's a work truck that tuened out pretty decent....please...do not think that this is as good as a professional spray job with real automotive paint...it's not...but it is a low cost alternative that looks decent....
