Ls swap fuel tank explanation

OK, I HAVE A 71 SWB THAT WE COMPLETED A 6.0 LS SWAP FROM A 2006 CHEVY 2500. I HAVE READ MULTIPLE PLACES THAT YOU MUST HAVE A FUEL TANK CAPABLE OF EFI. I HAD AN OLD FUEL CELL FROM A PONTOON BOAT LAYING AROUND AND BUILT A FRAME TO HOLD IT IN PLACE. THE FUEL PUMP IS EXTERNAL AND THE SENDING UNIT IS A GENERAC ALL PURPOSE UNIT FROM THE PARTS HOUSE. EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE WORKING AND RUNNING FINE.
AM I MISSING SOMETHING...? I CANT SEEM TO JUSTIFY $700-$800 ON A FUEL CELL WHEN THE ONE I PUT IN WORKS FINE, BUT EVERYWHERE I READ THAT YOU MUST HAVE A FUEL CELL SPECIFICALLY FOR EFI?

PLEASE HELP ME ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS. IF I AM SCRUBBING PERFORMANCE DO TO A CHEAP FUEL CELL THEN IM ALL IN ON THE RIGHT ONE!!

Re: Ls swap fuel tank explanation

If it's not baffled you need keep a good amount of fuel in it so the fuel pickup doesn't get uncovered in a turn. If you uncover the pickup fuel injected engines quit almost instantly.

Watch gas monkey pikes peak truck dies in the corners from them not using a baffle tank setup
season 6 episode 6

Baffled tanks can make the difference from losing fuel on hard corners

Re: Ls swap fuel tank explanation

Plenty of swaps out there using stock tanks...I've run my stock tank nearly dry several times and not had any issues but once..I was going up a steep hill and it started missing..my pickup tube is in the tank center..having a baffle wouldn't make any difference..baffles are designed to prevent fuel slosh...a fuel sump might have helped...if you were auto crossing or road course then maybe...just dont run it really low and your stock tank will be fine
The type of tank has 0 to do with performance as long as your fuel supply is adequate...heck you could pump fuel outta a coke bottle and make it run...

Re: Ls swap fuel tank explanation

I am using stock tanks with no baffles and when I installed my tank pumps I bought pumps that had small steel (open on the top )box bolted to the bottom of each fuel pickup that has one small hole in the bottom corner. This works as a baffle as the gas wont drain out of it when you go up hill or make a turn. and it will refill itself once you are level. I assume if your uphill climb demand for fuel exceeds the amount of fuel the box holds then you would run out but that would have to be a pretty good amount of time.

Re: Ls swap fuel tank explanation

I bought my pump and parts from Tanks Inc. They sell a couple different pumps for LS conversations. Go to their web site and you can see a picture of the unit. All are the same just different pump specs for your app. There customer service is outstanding. my part number is PA-4. I am running a 2001 LS1 out of a firebird. I bought one pump from them directly and the other from Summit . Summit sells their products. You will need to cut a large hole in your tank to install this pump unit and run a separate oem sender for the fuel gauge to work. it is a tight fit but it fits.
