need power window info

Hey guys, I was hoping to get a set of regulators from a later model truck and just change the rollers, but after checking with all of the local yards, they either don't have any or want more than I'm willing to pay. Does anyone know what donor cars would have the belt drive units? I would rather not have to spend the day pulling door panels off every chevy car in the junkyard looking for them, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Oh, by the way, I was originally going to use a kit made by Spal "power window kit fits any car" but after looking at the kit, I've determined that it's more trouble than it's worth to try to make it work on one of these trucks. I would definately not recommend it for this application.

Thanks!

You don't want to use a belt drive system. I would look at the power window kit from A-1 Electric. It bolts right in to the stock location and works smoothly. Don't skimp on stuff like this, you'll regret it in the near future.

I second his emotion. The A-1 kit is the second kit I bought. Nothing else compares. The ease of just bolting in a direct replacement is great. I had a kit like that Spal one and it was crap. Trust me, its worth the extra few bucks to get a good kit. Jeff.

$239 for our pickups. Looks like an easy bolt-up.

Thanks for all of your coments!

I appreciate the cautions about the belt drive units, but I think that I still want to try them out before I shell out a whole bunch of money for the A-1 kit (some of us just have to learn the hard way ).

Terry P, I've seen your earlier posts on the subject, do you remember what you used as a donor car? When I ask the counter guy at the 2 or 3 salvage yards that I normaly use, nobody seems to know exactly which cars had them. If you could point me in the right direction, it would save me a lot of time pulling door panels off to find what I'm looking for.

Also, on some cars the drivers window will go all the way down with just one quick push of the button, is this a function of the switch, or is there a black box that I need to grab as well, or what?

Thanks again everybody

I do not know just what cars I got my belt drives from, but virtually all GM cars of the late 70's up had them. What I went for is cars with tall windows, as many cars do not have enough travel up/down for our trucks. The big trick is to get your old regulators working smoothly, then the lifting point will be way at the back of the window. You also have to straighten out the belt tracks, and that takes some time, and I made a special tool to slide along the track slot to space the slot evenly. On my 68, I threw out the whole regulator, and placed the lift point near the center of gravity of the glass, with a little bias towards the glass tipping foreward. This worked great on the passenger side, but I could not get the driver's side to work without using the regulator to hold the glass level.
The auto up feature is handled by a black box not in the door, works on current sensing, I think, but I have never been able to find such a box under the dash of the caddy's etc, that have the feature. I'm going up to Everett, WA this week, and plan to hit the junk yards, and the auto up boxes are one of the things I'm looking for.

autoloc

I went to www.autoloc.com and found the kits for power windows and kits for power locks. As a seperate item they have the splined window cranks that accept stock handles. These seem like a real trick factory look with modern operation. Does anyone have any experience with these? I would probably use these with the 72 molded door panels and am a little concerned about the length of spline being long enough.

Thanks for the lead.
