Is there a left and a right for valve covers?
Are these on the wrong side? Does it matter?

Doesn't really matter. Easier to get oil into it rather than reaching over and around the brake booster

On the small block V8s, they were designed to be non-directional, left/right, front/back -- doesn't matter as long as Oil Cap and PCV are in good locations. After market SBC valve covers, you'd want the MICKEY THOMPSON [for example] in an orientation to be read.
On the BBCs, there is a definite slant, so the high side is inboard, but I think the left cover could be moved to the right, and vice versa. On the L6s, [292, 250, 230] there is a definite front and back, and 3 screws on one side and 4 on the other.

Generally oil fill would go on the same side as the dipstick. So on a small block, oil fill should be on the driver's side, and vice versa on a big block.
I've used a similar trick to spot a lot of fake big block cars... hood light should be on the oil fill side.
