figured id also post here since my truck is an 85 suburban

hello all. i am looking for information and some pics of cleaned up engine bays.
or direction on where i can go and find some info. have an 85 suburban 5.7 350.
live in jersey. no inspection needed/emissions.
I'm pretty sure there are a ton of things in the engine bay that i don't need.
question is do i need to get a different carb and intake to be able to get rid of the mess???
i was looking around and saw a youtube vid where a guy just took a saws all and cut a bunch of crap out. not really what id like to do. just seems there is a ton of stuff in the engine bay. and if i don't really NEED it all, id like to clean it up some.
appreciate any help

I took out all the crap for the evap canister. Put a new Edelbrock carb in, new headers, valve covers and air cleaner. And then new plugs & wires. But mostly all I removed was just the lines to & from the canister.

Good work. The yellow plug wires never look good.

Here's my 82 engine compartment, former home to a 250 six. I left the dark gray seam sealer on the firewall when I did the engine swap, but now wish I hadn't.

I'm sorry, I guess I should have explained that a bit better than I did. The canister is still there, since it's tucked down there in the front. I removed most of the canister lines that were running across the engine. So the fuel tank vent is still on the canister. The rest of the ports are capped off.
I did read somewhere, that someone was able to vent the fuel line somehow, so the canister could be removed also. I just never did, since the canister is out of the way. I just didn't care for all the lines.

You probably want to move the vac advance line to the other side of the Edelbrock. That is, run manifold vacuum as opposed to ported vacuum.

Here's mine. Getting rid of the fan and shroud cleaned it up a lot.

We had this discussion back when I did this. I believe it is actually on the manifold side, opposite of what my photo is showing. But I'll check it just to make sure.

if i knew more, i guess i would apply all the knowledge, but since i don't , i asked the question.
seems like everyone is running aftermarket manifold and carb.
is it needed? or is there a cheap way to do it.
pretty sure i don't need 90 % of whats in engine bay.... maybe not 90% but a lot.
right now theres a ton of stuff in the way if i wanted to change valve cover gaskets same if i wanna do basic tune up.
dont wanna take things off if i need them.
but don't really want whatever i don't need in there
not a show truck in any way. just a daily driver. but since i don't need inspection, think it can all go.

anyone in jersey wanna help, ill buy beer....

if you have a carb that isnt computer controlled and an hei dist. all of that emission stuff can go! AIR pump, EGR, the numerous vacuum hoses.. and as far as the vacuum for the dist, i ran my hose to the ported side of my eddy carb. seemed when i got on it the motor was sluggish and would ping when it was on manifold vacuum
