Pinned rocker stud

How do you remove a pinned rocker stud on a SBC head.. The rocker stud is cross threaded and needs to be removed..

If your threads are totally stripped I think I'd start by welding something on to be able to pull it out.

As a last resort drill it out and tap for a new stud. It might be best left for a machine shop to have it done right.

What do you mean by pinned? Maybe I am missing something here as I am a newbie to the SBC.

Re: Pinned rocker stud

older sbc heads had pressed in rocker studs . sometimes they would start to pull up and out . the trick was hammer it back in . cross drill a hole and insert a roll pin to lock it in place .

Re: Pinned rocker stud

You will have to drive out the roll pin and then pull the damaged stud. Depending on the stud, this may require pulling the head unfortunately.

This is correct. Had to do that with a set of pinned heads I had on a 350 in a 79 K25. Only way I could access everuthing to drive the pins out was to remove the head and have it on my bench.

Gary

They didn't drill it all the way through only50% so I can not drive the roll pin out..

Da fuq?
Thats some half ass stuff right there. I'd drill the pin out, and keep going till its a full hole and not a half.

That’s the cheap method!
Done that way 90% of the time.
Can’t drill it out though.
The pin is likely hardened.

Thats what im afraid of,, its a shame too cant remember the head number but gm made them for two years only 70and 71 76cc with 2.02 and 1.60 valves from the factory.
Someone took the time to port the heads also. I know gm made tons of 76cc heads but these are big valve and good thick casting

Re: Pinned rocker stud

o.k. maybe worth a shop taking the time to fix them and swap to screw in studs and guide plates .

Re: Pinned rocker stud

Yep... those can be modified to accept screw in studs.

Re: Pinned rocker stud

If you pull the heads the machine shop should be able to drill through on the backside so the pin can be pushed out.
I'm talking out my a** a bit here since I've never done it but just my .02
Please let us know what you end up doing.

Re: Pinned rocker stud

well you also know what this combo does and how it works so why not leave it alone and fix this goof and be done with no extra re-tuning / tweeking / pulling what hair you have out getting a whole new combo to run .

Well I must have been the second to the last guy, unfortunately I left Michigan first. What about your shirt? Just kidding.

The Shop I use says the same thing. I think they did some good work, I have not brought anything back to them!

Most likely the Cast heads are still out there performing once they get hardened seats, viton seals and the other problems addressed.
