How to strip old paint off plastic 72 door panels?

So, I painted my 1972 plastic, textured door panels about 10 years ago, and didn't prep and paint them correctly, so now, the paint is cracking off in places (mostly on the curves).

I bought a new set of panels to paint, but holy crap the fit was terrible...

So back to the originals, how can I safely strip plastic door panels without ruining them???

I've read oven cleaner works for plastic. However, it will likely ruin the vinyl interior.

No vinyl. I just want to strip these. This pic was taken back when they looked nice. 10 years later there's a lot of chipped off paint. I want to prep and paint them correctly this time.

Re: How to strip old paint off plastic 72 door panels?

Soda blast? I think stripper will melt it. It melted an outer A/C vent housing that I used it on. I've used walnut shells for chalking, but not sure they would cut through the paint. I know someone else who doesn't like the shells (leaves oil residue he says) and uses recycled glass. I guess that would do it, but wonder how easily. It might kill the texture if blowing on one spot too long. I know soda blast strips paint but not rust, so sounds like it wouldn't hurt the plastic

Re: How to strip old paint off plastic 72 door panels?

Back when I had my 73 hatch back ventura I used gas and scotch brite too strip the plastic panels in the hatch area.

There was 3 layers of previous paint on them and a layer or 2 came off real easy but some was hard too get off.

After I was done I cleaned them very very good with degreaser and hot soapy water.

They turned out awesome.

After it was all done somebody said brake fluid takes paint off dang near anything. Saturate some rags with it and lay them on for a good while and wait.

Then a good cleaning.
