That's just normal trucks at Don Yenko's dealership.
The one being looked for is yellow and white, modded to look kinda nascat truck series-ish. It has 427 badges on the fenders, a plaque, and it is roped off so no one can inspect it.

The thing is,GM wasn`t building 427s for anything in 71/72,except tall-decks for MD trucks.I`d thing if it were a true COPO it would have a 454,eh?I would think it wouldn`t have been a loaded-up Cheyenne longbed if built for speed. All the other "mods" are later stuff from the`90s.It`s just someone`s tacky truck with a hellish motor IMHO.

well that truck was one of a fleet built for service duty at the speedway by GM the only "add ons" are the wheels and tires and the lettering other than that it is an as delivered new from GM truck/// available for inspection including the build sheets in the library at talledage speedway museaum

Re: 71-72 copo cheyenne w/427 etc

I also doubt it's authenticity. if it is supposed to be preserved in a musium, then why did they update it with later stuff instead of making it look like it *suposedly* did on race day? you don't see Nascar series race cars from the early 70's with late model parts...they are all preserved....esp if in a musium, where history is supposed to be preserved.
While I think they probably woulda used a Cheyenne... or at least an upper and lower trim two tone paint... I don't think they woulda put optional 'parachute' mirrors on it.
And if it is up for inspection, what does that sign in the drivers window say? Probably don't touch me or something liek that.
If some one can prove that it is real... please do.
The point was made about nothing getting a 427 with the exception of tall deck dog motors.... NO ONE in there right mind woulda used a tall deck to go fast with... not back then, the mountian motor mods are recent, not from the 70's.

Re: 71-72 copo cheyenne w/427 etc

Guys, i used to drive to and from work every day, right by the talladega track.
i gotta tell ya, the track people and the factories are a pretty tight bunch.
if the folks at talladega want 10 new half tons with monster motors in them, they have got people they can call at gm ford and chrysler and it will happen.
the things i have seen coming out onto i-20 have kept me smilin for years.
oh and by the way, the pace cars you can buy from a dealership are pace car replicas, not anything like a real pace car, in the suspension dept, or motor . trust me on this.
as far as the tube grill and spoiler, i dont have any problem with them.those cheesy tube grills were around back then too. while it didnt come off the gm assembly line, it probably was on the truck while it was running around seeing track service duty. I would think that the truck is meant to be as it was used at the track and not a restoration of the way it arrived at talladega, from the dealer.
if you could get a hold of some footage from the 71 to 73 winston 500s you may spot the truck. aside from that i don't know of any way to prove it.
oh and a side note Did you guys know that harley davidson tests a lot motorcycles at talladega speedway.

Re: 71-72 copo cheyenne w/427 etc

Exactly. If it is meant to be as it was used at the track, they could have found some stickers from back then.I don`t really care. That`s what I`d have done if I was curator.I wonder if it`s a factory 427,which there were none in`71.I mean, there are no COPO 427 cars, even.I was thinking it would be a "race" motor, not offered for any street vehicle. Also,I don`t consider a vehicle built by special relationship a COPO if it wasn`t available to anyone else, even Don Yenko.I also would tend to think this may have been "built" in the shop at the track(swap).SLP bought 305 Camaros and crate 350s and other parts like transmissions and "built" their own muscle cars, for nearly double the original cost. Then, they started getting their own cars built by GM and the cost came down.Just pointing out the difference.I`d need to see documentation or a testimonial from an ol`boy that was part of this, that`s all.
