Post Ok guys, got all the details on the 700R4!!!

Ok the 700r4 I have been talking about on here the past day or so, I got the details, tell me what do you guys think about how it is built!
Master kit: New steel & friction plates, o ring new od sprag, new low & revers sprag,
10 vane pump rotor, 10 vane rotoe guild,
new pump vanes, heavy duty pump rings
3-4 clutch pack, 9 cluthes
band
bushing kit
shift kit
corvette servo kit
This was built by a jam up tranny guy, he is very well know in this area, it has hydrolic lock up, not elec. was built for 500 hp and 500 ftlb of tq, it has less then 1000 mile on it, and it has been sitting for two years with out being ran at all, the pan is a stock pan.
so what do you guys think? I am no tranny dude at all. I talked to the guy that owns it, he said it hits hard through out the gears

He said he can't remember what year it was, but he believed it is a 87 model, he asking $500.00, I might be able to get it cheaper, I have not even talked price with him yet to see if I can get him to come down, I have not made up my mind on it yet! The other thing is, it only has 1000 miles on it, but it has been sitting in the car for 2 years, with out even being started up, this guy has it in a 32 ford street rod, he built this car for his wife, and he is changing out the tranny because his wife says it hit way to hard for her, and she dont like the way it shifts, he showed me the rebuild sheet on it today, it cost him $900.00 just to have it rebuilt, this is not counting what the tranny cost to began with, so any way, I am going to think about it more over the weekend, and get back with him on Monday, I had one in the past, behind a 6.2 diesel, and it gave me pure hell, then the diesel went south on me, and I built a 355 sb, with about 325 hp, and all it did for that small block was make it lug around town, get on it hard, and shift 1st to 2nd, and damn the rpms would drop so much, that the front nose of the truck would nose down like you let off of it, and with what I am building now, I do not want this to happen, but then again, the converter was designed for a diesel not gas......so I just have to think about this more.

It does come with the coverter, it is a stock converter, that he bought when he had the tranny rebuilt. I want to add this, I know this guy very very well, he is always building strret rods, not drag car but just old rods, he is very perticular about his cars, and he doesn't do nothing half ass, I mean nothing, always buys the best when it come to his cars and always uses the best people he knows of to do rebuilds, if I didnt know him, I wouldnt even be thinking about this tranny at all, he is a jam up guy when it come to cars, and one god thing about him, he is chevy all the way

i would make him agree to pull the pan or let you do it and inspect the inside of pan for anything bad, and if he can prove it was rebuilt and if it comes with verter and all then 500 isnt bad at all, IMO

I thought about asking him to let me pull the pan, I might do that, also, he showed me the biuld sheet on the tranny, it is dated 5/12/2000, and they guy that built it put his logo on it, and the logo matches the case, like I said this guy is straight guy, hell he is a good friend of mine, I just dont know if this tranny is going to perform like I want it too, I want my truck to be a daily driver but run in the low 12's to mid 12's

sam's 72, I think your on the right track, the 700r will hold up for you if properly built. I'm running a 2500 stall behind a 425 hp 396. I bought the tranny for $1000.us
from Extreme Transmission in Saskatoon, Sask. This shop races "Promod" (mid 6 sec. passes in the 1/4) around the country and warranteed the tranny for a year. I ran 13.7 before I added 150hp juice to it and now run approx. 11.9 and its still a daily driver. If you can get a 6 month warranty that would go a long way to ease your mind.

wow look at all the bulletins regardign problems with the 700r4 in the first two or three years: http://www.alldata.com/TSB/10/841002HC.html

all the bulletins that begin with ATRAB, start from the bottom of the page with the oldest ones lol, damn.... 82-84 were the first gen of the 700r4, 85-86 were the sec gen of them, then 87-91 or whenever they went ot the 4L60E electronic control

input splines and ocnverters and lots of other parts of the first gen are not same as the second, for those who didnt know, 87-up have the 10 vane pumps and upgraded parts from factory

You all are failing to mention a downshift kit! I wish I had put one in my Tranny before I installed it. Summit part # BMM-70237 For 34.00 it's well worth it!

I'm running 3:73 posi, and around 90 to 100mph if your in overdrive and accedently give it to much throttle It'll shift into third Red lining your motor in a hurry! This down shift kit will stop that.

Also seeing as the tranny was sitting for awhile I'd run some cheap tranny fluid for a shrt time and then drain and change filter, and put in some high dollar, fluid and a quart of Trick Shift.

But the tranny is well worth 500.00! Thats for sure, good luck and remember the down shift kit. Keep us posted

Good advice, nobody would want their tranny exploding at 100 plus mph.

How has every one been doing? I hope good! I been out of town for the past three days, just got home. OK, for one thing I am not an IDIOT! second I dont confess to know any thing about trannys, this is why I leave it to the tranny guys, when I converted my diesel to a 355 I went to my tranny guy and he said I dont need to change nothing, now this is a pro builder talking, so with my limited knowledge on trannys, I had to go with what this guy told me at that time, now does that make me an IDIOT? I wouldn't think so. I have changed tranny builders about 5 times since then, it is very very hard to find a good one, I got one now that I am going to talk with tomorrow on this 700r4. verses a Th350 with lower 1st 2nd gears. I will keep you guys up to date with this, I appreciate all the positive feed back from you guys.
Thanks
Sam,

Sam go with the 700-R4. I have one in my 71 and could not ask for a better trans. I have installed a 93 sub tank (42 gal.) with TPI motor, and 4:10 rear in it also, and just put 568 miles on one tank of gas before filling up. The motor and trans have about 150,000 on them both. I will never put any other trans. in anything except for the 700-R4's. Good luck and enjoy what ever you do.

Um there's one tranny above the 700R4. The ultimate over drive the 4L80E!

Andy4639 so how do you like the TPI? I've always wanted one. Is it responsive compared to a carb, and good intake? Is the gas mileage increase noticable? Also how hard is the wiring? Do you have O2 sensors and all that crap? Also do you have a cold air set-up? If not just buy looking at it do you think I'd be easy?

I have the cold air intake on it. (Home Made) for less than $75 in it all. I really injoy it because I don't have to worry about it cranking in the morning. I did the motor back in the late 80" and Street & Performance were the only company doing this at the time. I'm running a v-6 fierro computer with a specail chip, no egr valve. I do have oxgen sensor and they changed it over to a maps instead of mass air. You can check it out on my singnature page.

4L80Es are in newer Chevy Pickups, and will cost alot of money to put one in because unlike the 700R4 you must have a computer. Unless you have over 600hp you don't need a 4L80E. But they do have a 33% over drive. But they have a higher first gear.

If you want info on the newer trans go out and buy book on tpi and tbi engine swapping by Mike Knell.I bought one fromspeedway motors lincoln Ne and its worth every penny. From my first read fron it I understand the 4L80E was fron 3/4 and 1 tons. You can go to the 4L60E which is an update of the 700R4.The 4L80E is basically an electronically controled 400 with a overdrive gear added.
