Late model box on 72 shortbed
I have a 72 cheyenne shortbox. the box is kinda rotten, and needs to be replaced. it seems to me that in a magazine i saw a 67-72 with a later model (88-99) stepside box on it. has anyone seen or done this conversion? the lower body lines seem very similar to me. any info on this would be appreciated.

how much did that box cost you? this truck is going to be a budget resto. it's pretty solid overall. i have two new fenders, and lower door skins for it. i still need both inner fender linings. for now, it's a driver. it has a 454, with a 400 trans. it'll roast em into 3rd

If you look around, one could be had pretty reasonable. I paid 500 for mine. Came off a show truck based out of Chicago. Never had anything in the bed and no body work. It was just my lucky day. Average would be around 800 down here in Arkansas.

i was thinking of just gettinga clean 88-98 longbed, and some 67-72 longbed patch panels and weld away. i thought that right before the tailight, adding a piece of metal to change from the groove in the bed to the late model flat bed side. about 2 inched from the tailight. not sure how clear i was with that explanation. in my mind it looks awesome!!!!! course in my mind i look awesome too!!!!

Ill voice my opinion since Ive seen both styles done in person. First thing NO mater what you do you HAVE no remove the upper body line on the new style box. It that doesnt fit anything on 67-72 trucks or 47-54 which Ive seen too and I just hate the look of this. They never remove the upper body line or modify the wheel well curves they just slap the box and forget at it. The thing looks like a after thought when you DONT take the time and modfiy the new stlye box to look like it should be on that style of truck. Ive seen some real sweet looking 49-53 chevys but when viewed from the back or side it looks like dog breath cause the guy installed a new box and did nothing to make it look like it belongs there.
The pic of the long bed box on the 67-72 looks like CRAP. Sorry but see it in person and you will know what I mean. The box sticks out, the front wheel well doesnt match the rear. Now if I was going to do a new style box on a 67-72 it would be the step side box. Remove the upper body line and modify the wheel well to match the front. Or if I was really wanting something different buy some fiberglass rear fenders and mold them into place after removing the old rear fenders. But in all reality I guess I would remove that glass box side, buy new steel short sides, weld them back on the step side box. Then mold steel 67-72 rear fenders on. Anyway I just think if you slap that new bed on without changing a few things, its gonna look like SH$T, an afterthought

Re: Late model box on 72 shortbed
It's not a hard conversion if you can stand the looks. I think it looks terrible, might as well throw a dodge bed on it, but that's my opinion. If the wheel wells were even close to matching it wouldn't be so ugly.
