4wd steeringbox question

is there a way to tighten up the gearboxes? my 84 blazer has about a 1/4 turn of play. also. what years would interchange with mine? 84 k5 blazer all stock. silverado

not sure if the '73 and up has the 10 spline trans-to-transfer case coupler, but if so, those are notorious for wearing out. the coupler can be replaced, but some of the wear is likely to be in the transmission output shaft.

Maybe it's the way your question is worded. Normally when I hear "gearbox" I think trans/transfer, sounds more like your questioning the steering box.

First place to start on the steering is make sure the entire front end is good. Fix the lower ball joint then go from there. A little slop in a lot of parts can equal a bunch in the end.

Good call I was going to say and ask the same question. I was thinking he meant steering box as well. Check and replace all worn parts then go from there. Your steering box might not be to bad could just be lots of other worn out parts!

yup steering gear is what im asking about. all the rack seems tight. its just when I turn the whjel I have some freeeplay. I heard they could be tightened but I don't know for sure

There's a set screwsomewheree on the box used to remove slop to a point. I don't know where as I've never used it, but it's there.

A better discription in the original post would have helped, along with the title. Many guys over-look questions that they don't feel that they can answer, that's why it is important to title your questions well...and provide the needed information.

There's an adjustment screw that's held in place by a jamb nut. Hold the screw in place, loosen the jamb nut, and turn the screw clockwise but only by a very small amount before tightening the jamb nut. Then try a slow, careful test drive.

Do this at your own risk -- I don't claim it to be a safe procedure. If you get the adjustment too tight, the steering will bind and will not freely return to center without your help. You may need to try a few adjustments to find the sweet spot where steering feels normal.

Keep in mind that if your steering box is worn, it will need to be replaced -- at best, this procedure will only buy you a little time.

You might want to take a look at the "rag Joint" in the linkage between steering wheel & steering box.

PLUS, everything else that moves when turning...already stated that he has a bad ball joint. More than likely has a worn out drag link assy.
