I normally get chicken when it comes to messing with air bags

Piece of cake. You'll need an awl, compass, or other pointed object to poke out the 4 pins on the back. Turn the wheel 90 degrees to get access to all 4 and it will pop right out. Disconnect the electrical connector and it's off. Mind the pin and spring for the horn, and remove the nut holding the wheel on. Use a steering wheel puller and it will come right off.

I've taken mine off quite a few times for turn signal switch replacement, dash replacement, and other things.

FYI, there's no need to take the wheel off to replace the turn signal switch. There's enough room to get it out of there. You just need a really stubby short torx bit and I turn it with a 1/4" wrench.

Re: 1997 C1500 Steering wheel removal

On my '95 Suburban the steering wheel was all chewed up at 1 o'clock when I got it. Right where I grab it. It really bugged me at first, but I've gotten used to it. A couple years ago I bought a nice upgrade wheel to replace it. I'm busy and all, but when I do consider putting it on I'm hesitant and put it off. I've changed so many steering wheels but never an air bag one or anything newer than a 73-87. Things seldom go straight forward for me any time I work on newer stuff. I think I need encouragement. If I knew just what's involved it would help. I gave up on Helms manuals when the one I ordered for a '90 Blazer was three books, two for schematics!
