Recognize These GMC Letters?

Got these in a group of parts and not at all familiar with them. They are die cast, rather large, measure 3'' tall and about 6 1/2'' length. All studs intact but have no part numbers cast to the back side. Two of them are painted and one is chrome. The painted ones have been a re-paint at some point. Kinda cool, just not sure what they came off of. Thinking mid to late 60s BIG truck? Any idea and feed back are appreciated.

Re: Recognize These GMC Letters?

May also be the hood emblems, 69/70 GMC. This is Krue's 70 GMC. They maybe on other 68-72, but not positive. May have also been on some 67/72 tailgates (Fleetside) if I remember correctly.

Not sure of the sizes, but you maybe correct that they are the front end of the bigger boys.

Re: Recognize These GMC Letters?

Look like big truck to me. 4500 and larger series and possibly school bus. I think they were attached to the center of the grill.

Re: Recognize These GMC Letters?

Thinking your probably right Eric. Just a bit odd there are no cast in GM part numbers on the back sides.

Re: Recognize These GMC Letters?

Hard to tell size in the pic but sure looks like you nailed it there. Any idea what size truck / capacity weight or year that truck is? These will probably wind up on the parts forum at some time. Thanks.

1978 GMC Astro cabover

AS for size, if you look at the headlights, they appear to be 7" H6024, use them for size.

Re: Recognize These GMC Letters?

Warren, that seems to be about right. The letters are about 6 1/2'' in width, comparing them to the 7'' head lights appears to be nearly the same. Thanks.

Re: Recognize These GMC Letters?

I believe all Astros had chrome letters. These would have been off a medium to heavy duty, or HandiVan where they painted the grilles and bumpers. I believe the same letters were used in chrome or painted on various models, like they only made one set of letters for all bit trucks over several years for all the models. The late-60s may have all had chrome letters, even with painted grille. Could be a early-mid 60s thing.

Re: Recognize These GMC Letters?

Tim, thanks for the added info. This board and it's always come thru with an answer. Still surprising that there are no cast in part numbers like usually see on door handles, window cranks, engine call out emblems, various model fender emblems. Kinda strange that the General didn't put them on these emblems. Maybe a GMC thing for large trucks?

Re: Recognize These GMC Letters?

It is odd. I see numbers on everything OEM, or thought so. I have seen them so small I couldn't read (with these eyes) it with a magnifying glass. Plenty of room on those compared.

The red truck appears to have 5" letters, as looking at the H5001 5" headlights

They look a couple inches shorter than the lights to me, closer to 3". The Astro letters look about 5" compared to the 7" lamps. I'm thinking the 60s trucks where the letters are part of the grille

Will be listing these later today/evening in the 60-66 parts forum. Special-k suggested early to mid 60s for dating these so will go with those thoughts for alisting. Tim has a pretty fair idea about these ol' trucks.

''Blue GMC'' will have first rights for these after listing.
