I'm prepping to install some sound deadener prior to new carpet and need to fix some surface rust in corners just in front of doors. I'm okay with tackling the floor as it will be covered anyway, but I'm nervous about trying to repair about an inch up on the kick panels as they will need painting.

Any thoughts? I'm thinking a body shop may be best. This is a very close up picture. The black part on the right is weather stripping.

I covered the whole kick panel with sound deaden-er. ACC will sell you extra matching carpet that piping can be sewn on edges an then cover whole kick panel in carpet. Unless you are going for restoration.

Yes, I'm trying to keep it as original as possible. It was fully restored 13 years ago and just trying to keep it nice and up to date.

JMHO, but, it will continue to rust and flake off unless you sandblast and use a good metal restorer product. Do it now as it is still structural, and seamseal.

They always leak at the windshield post, so any carpeting will hold the moisture

Yep, if you don't want to blast, wire brush it real good, apply a rust converter like Permatex, seam sealer, prime, then paint whole kick panel area. You may find a paint shop in your area to match your paint and put it in an aerosol can or there is a newer version that I think you add your paint to.

Thanks guys - decided to take it to a body shop I trust to get it done right. However, is anyone else nervous about putting a product like Dynamat down in case this needs fixing down the road. Maybe a guy should be using dynapad instead so it's not actually stuck to the floor underneath the carpet?
