Re: Saddle color trucks

Hi guys, I'm new here. My Dad and I are in the process of giving our '65 a facelift. We are wanting to go with a fawn/saddle and white paint scheme, but we are having trouble finding codes 525 or 555 available. Has anyone had problems getting this color recently? Our painter uses R+M and we have also checked Martin Senour. Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Saddle color trucks

Saddle is a '66 exterior metallic color. It is not the same as '65 Fawn non-metallic exterior color or the even lighter 1964 Fawn non -metallic color. 62-63 Desert beige is similar to 1965 Fawn, but slightly lighter. The interior medium fawn metallic does not match any standard exterior color offered. It may be close to a exterior metallic car color that was offered in the mid 60's. Need to do some research on car colors. Always check paint code with specific year of vehicle to get the right color. If you find a blank kick panel tag, and stamp in SPL, you can literally paint your truck just about any color in the world and say its "factory"

Re: Saddle color trucks

Here is a '65 with a non standard paint color when new. You wont find this metallic gold on a '65 paint chart. If you were to open the door and see the kick panel, it would say SPL.

That truck turned out awesome. I've been waiting for more pictures of it since you posted pics from the shop. I knew it was going to be real nice but that's incredible.

Re: Saddle color trucks

I'm going to pull this one to the top as I am trying to match a formula to the original saddle color of Jon's beautiful original 66 K20. I have the PPG's crossover in base clear and it appears to be much like the driftwood colors of some of these nice looking trucks above. I have a pair of factor take off saddle mirror arms to try and match from but if anyone has a formula captured from a color shot of an original 66 Chevy truck saddle paint sample I would like to hear about it. The painter and I were just discussing this morning about shooting and blending and tinting the sample on the underside floor of the truck before doing the firewall or wheels.

Re: Saddle color trucks

Jon. I was 6 years old and a first grader when we picked up my Dad's brand new 66 Custom Cab big window long box 283 pickup in September 1965.The dealer in town ordered it to dad's specs code 555 saddle gold off white. The day we picked it up they had it inside the basement of the dealership because it was before the showing date of the new 66 models. My dad came unglued when that truck was driven up out of the building. The front fenders and hood were a dark gold almost brown and the rest was a lighter gold color. I remember riding home in the fresh black painted floor and the truck smelling new. Ended up my truck to use in high school but was not my daily car just my everything else car building hobby vehicle for 7 years. I even learned to drive in it when I was 13 with my dad.
OK that color was so inconsistent in uniformity about anything could be correct. Your 66 looks like my dad's looked for color.
Have you had a paint rep use their color match equipment to formulate something close to the original yet? I am taking two take off mirror bases over Wednesday to see if there is enough surface to try. With a red oxide color primer in the thin areas it maybe a fruitless endeavour.

Check posts #33 & 35. Fawn is different than saddle. The saddle does have more of a gold look. New paint vs. original old paint also plays a part in the shade differences. I thought there was a thread for fawn colored trucks as well, but I'm not 100% certain.
