Where to start

I have the opportunity to get a k5 for free from my dad since he's not using it and I have a engine on the way that's getting passed down to me from other family members. It's tired but will do for awhile. It's a 454. I'm wondering it has no interior and I'm wanting to make it nice on the inside to start than work my way out it will need paint of course. But I don't really know where to start and kinda wondering what order you guys go in? Also where can you get seats from? As in what trucks from the newer ones? Not looking for a original restoration just a nice driver.

Re: Where to start

If it we're me I would start researching the net and check out what others have done and see what appeals to you. I would next search craigslist and pull-a-parts in your area see what's available and prices. And start building what I wanted.

I've had 4 k5's and never have grown tired of them, one day I might have another

Re: Where to start

I'd get the motor in it and get it in running/driving condition first, just so you don't lose interest. Do you have any pics?

Re: Where to start

I left the interior til last. a bit of research made it clear that there is a TON of stuff that might need fixing that would mess up the new interior to be taken out again to fix. Think Body mounts, rocker panels, rust repair in floorpans, indecision about what to do with the rear seats, tailgate etc etc

Re: Where to start

I will get some pics once it's in my drive way. It has nothing in the interior right now. Just the floor. What do you guys usually cover the floor with?

Re: Where to start

Could be anything - I am going Dynamat and re-carpeting, others use spray in liners, or a combination of both. In fact I am also considering a liner behind the rear seats with carpeting in the front, it's all up in the air at present. Depends what you'll use it for.

Re: Where to start

Okay that sounds good. My biggest question is my sliding windows I need to rebuild. Is there a kit somewhere to buy or is just putting stuff together?
