I need to remove the screws in the doors of my '57. It looks like a large clutch head, but I don't have anything that fits it. Does anyone know what they are?

It is called a clutch head. You can pick up a screwdriver for it at most auto part stores, I know Napa had it. I believe it comes in 4 sizes.

OK. Must be the biggest one, because I have three in my screw driver kit and all were too small. There were four screws that hold the vent knobs in place that also looked like they were clutch head, but none of my drivers would fit them either.

I removed them with vice grips.

I'll get the right tool for taking apart the doors.

Chevy Duty sells a four-pack of those, John. And if you hunt around you can find the bits (like this). You might want to call your favourite store before you make the trip -- as you probably already know they aren't that easy to find...

There's a big swap meet here in Portland OR this weekend, I should be able to find what I need there (along with lots and lots of stuff I don't need

there's usually some for sale on ebay too. also do a google search for clutch head screwdrivers and you'll get some hits. $12-25 set of 4.

I got a 1/4, 3/8 drive sockets and the screwdriver set from Snap On all 12 pieces 34.00 about 10 years ago, only thing i ever bought from them. Or ever will.

I got them at the swap meet yesterday. $2.00 each for the biggest one, $1.00 each for the smaller ones. I got a couple of each in case I break one.

Hmmmm, for the clutch head screws in the door, the 1/4" is too small (stripped out one already) and the 5/16" is too big. I wonder if Chevy had a special size one? I'll give the chevy dealer a call and see.

Order the set from the Chevy Duty catalog...comes with every size you'll need...I bought a set and used all of them on my rebuild.

It turns out that not all 1/4" clutch head drivers are the same size. I bought 3 different ones that all measured .231" across. My brother let me borrow his, and it measures .251", and fits perfectly.

I'll check into the chevy duty ones and see how they are.
