temp sender
I have a '57 3100 with a 235 six. At a running temperature of about 170 the gauge moves only about 1/8 of it's range. Since there are no numbers I don't know if it is accurate. What should be the resistance range of the sender and is it safe to assume that at running temp the gauge needle should be approx straight up.
Thanks Paul |

Re: temp sender
The owner's manual indicates that the temp gauge needle should be near the center of the gauge at operating temp.
There are several different temperature senders available and not all work properly. And there are multiple temp range thermostats available, not all of which are accurate. Can you get an infra-red gun to check engine temp at the thermostat outlet? This thread has a part number for a Napa sender and also has a chart I posted for a sender I used. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=571910 |

Re: temp sender
There is a good thread about senders in this thread:
http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=516389 In post #13 there is info on the sending unit that worked for me. My needle runs slightly below half way of the indicating line, '59 w/ stock 235.

Re: temp sender
My 57 has an 89 corvette 350, and I am still running the original temp gauge and sender unit.
at 160, the gauge is at the left side of the gauge about 1/8 up the white line. I have had this truck for about 45 years and have had 6 different engines in it, and they all run in the same range with a 160 thermostat. (chevy v8's, as my truck was a v8 from the factory) with a 180 thermostat, the needle is closer to 1/3 up the white line. I have to believe the sender units for the 6 and the 8's are all the same since they all use the same gauge except for the early 6 cyl's were a bourdon tube type gauge with the copper tube attached.
