Power steering conversion-2

The more I read about converting to PS in my '57 3100 the more complicated it gets. It looks like all the vendors are selling the same kit made by CPP. Does anyone have experience with this...I'm trying to keep the truck as original as possible so I don't want to change the steering column. Thanks, Paul

Re: Power steering conversion-2

you should be able to use the top part of the old column and just install a bearing in the lower section, to support the shaft, and a ujoint on the end of the old shaft that is cut off from the old box (you have to cut the shaft off because it is actually part of the old box, the outer tube is pressed into the box and the inner shaft has the worm gear on the end of it). the column gets cut off just above the box so you have lots to work with and then you can custom size it after the new box is installed. you can use a zip disc on a grinder, a hacksaw, a recip saw, or whatever else you may have handy to cut metal. this makes the old box junk though, so if you were thinking the box is still good and want to save it then maybe you need to come up with a scrap box from somewhere that you can cut up. there is a how to on the lower bearing install somewhere on here. CPP has a how to on the install and it doesn't look all that intimidating.
have fun and post pics please.

Re: Power steering conversion-2

Let me say this much from experience:
Do something other than mounting a C10 box outside the frame rail.
I am only running 235/75/15 tires and have a *lot* of back space on the wheels, they still scrub the box. It doesn't sound like much when you are thinking with your wallet but it sucks turning a longbed pickup into a freaking barge when you want to park the thing.
Can't wait to get rid of the CPP outside-the-frame kit and go to IFS - just hurts because I've got some much time, energy & money tied up in the solid axle. It does pretty good (tapered bearings, power steering, disc brakes & freshened bushings) but for the money I spent it could have been doing a whole lot better. Live & learn.

I got the new cpp kit for my sons truck that replaces the stock steering box with a power one that bolts in the stock location.

The setup one ton of fun showed isn't cheap but it would by far give you the best results.

Re: Power steering conversion-2

I have a good Nissan truck steering box that would bolt in for $150 and you only need to make one bracket and a stabilizer bracket to install it.
It would fit in the same place as 1 ton's does. In fact, it kinda looks like his.....

I also have a used original TF box that I got with a bunch of stuff on a horse trade that I'd let go for $35 if you didn't want to cut yours up.

Re: Power steering conversion-2

unfortunately, my personal experience with CPP seems to indicate they're shoveling stuff out of shipping containers from china as fast as they can. When I needed help because their stuff didn't fit right what they has was somebody with very poor English read the instructions off the paper in the box, which is usually also available online faster.

If you get anything mounts a box ob the outside of the frame but behind the front axle be prepared for some u-joint stuff in the column.

Look at Rogers' build thread, his came out pretty good, it's CPP.
http://www.trifive.com/forums/showthread.php?t=107699 might be a few pages in. Post #373, on my computer that's page 13. Looks perfect.

Re: Power steering conversion-2

we ended up with a spare box i would be willing to cut a deal on since i can't return it. you would still need the rest of the kit, like the adjustable drag link and the pitman arm and hoses, etc. its still in the box.
