Rear end gear question

I was wondering if anybody out there is or has ever run 3.38 gears with a 235 6 cyl. powerglide setup. My '62 has 3.90 gears, and I was thinking about going to a taller gear for hwy cruising. I was just wondering how a 3.38, 6 banger PG setup would run... Torque, Power, highway cruising. I don't know if this was ever a factory setup

Thanks,
Clay

Re: Rear end gear question

The 3.38 truck rear is a scarce item. You are lucky if you found one. If you got one of these with an automatic in a truck it would more likely have been a Hydramatic than a PG. 3.36 was the standard gear with a 235 and PG from 57 on in the cars. These drove fine with no problems.

I have run a 235 with a 3.08 rear and also with a 3.55 and overdrive (all of these were manuals). Both of these combinations worked well, with the understanding that there were times when you didn't use the O/D.
