Temporary Paint
I am looking for some help on how to deal with my truck's paint. There are at least four layers of paint that have been put on over the years with the last being some type of silver over a metallic gold. In many places the paint is flaking and chipping off. This is very much just a working/daily driving vehicle at this time and not a restoration in any fashion. Down the road who knows? I would like it to look half way decent with the option for a real paint job in the future.
The truck needs a lot of rust repair that I will be doing slowly over time while keeping it a driver. Whatever I paint it with I need to be able to strip to repair rust, then repaint to protect it. Again, I may do a real paint job later. Any suggestions? I have read about the Rustoleum paint job and am leaning this way. Sounds like if I ever do a real paint job on it it would have to be stripped first but that would likely be the case anyway. I can also get a single stage paint at my local store and shoot the whole thing. Then get matching spray cans to deal with repairs. How do I deal with priming areas that I take down to bare metal? Very much a newbie when it comes to this so I appreciate the help. Obligatory pic attached. Thanks! |

Re: Temporary Paint
Thanks for the advice. So after I repair an area I put the epoxy primer over the bare metal? That will just protect the metal correct? I can then rattle can over it but will need to strip everything off before a "real" paint job?
I have heard about the SPI products but not really familiar with them. I will do some reading. |

Re: Temporary Paint
If you take it to bare metal you will need the epoxy on it...from there you can do your bodywork..

Re: Temporary Paint
Do the epoxy as the other posters have suggested. Just don't do the rustoleum. That you will have to strip completely and you will spend a lot of time sanding to make it look halfway decent. Single stage is very cheap and you can shoot panels at a time if you really wanted.

Re: Temporary Paint
Use the epoxy as suggested for the repair areas and hit it with whatever you want for a temp fix. No matter what you apply on top of the current multiple color changes it all needs removal before your distant repaint.
