Lost my little buddy today

We took our little Corgi mix to the vet today. He wasn't looking good.
It was bad news. The vet said that basically there was no hope for him.

So we made the decision that no one ever wants to make. He was miserable and he wasn't going to get better.
We really had no choice. What are you going to do when there's nothing to do?

All you can do is say goodbye.

He will be buried next to his pack. He may have been small but he ran the pack. He was a tough little dog. And he didn't take any crap off the others.

Rest in Peace Nacho.

So sad to hear that,as dog lovers,it is hard to make that decision, but sometimes you have to do it,it hurts like heck, but it is the right thing to do,time will heal all wounds,I have had to do it myself, and it never gets easier, the best thing is the memories and the things they used to do to make you laugh.

Re: Lost my little buddy today

Sorry for your loss.
I have had a Dog or cat
for as long as I can remember or both at times.
It seems to get harder each time as I get older to lose one.
They become part of the family.

Re: Lost my little buddy today

Aww, so sorry to hear. Look at that little bugger. I can see it all in that one picture. You had a good one and had to let him go.

I've known fuzzy little dogs like him. My friend has one he 'ended up with' and I always told him, "If you ever want to get rid of her...". Now Sadie is the sole survivor of his pack of littles. She knows me and greets me warmly even though I only get to his place about once a year.

I have been lucky in never having to put one down yet. My last dog, Buddy, was old and didn't seem well. One evening when I let him out to take care of business he only went about 20' from the door. He came over next to me and leaned his side against my leg and we just stood there awhile. I wondered if I should get him checked out and decided I'd call the vet in the morning.
He had been having trouble getting up into his chair, he had been sleeping in front of it on his bedding I fixed up for him. That night I fell asleep on the couch, which I never did since my wife left. I fell asleep thinking about going to the vet. I woke up in the middle of the night and he was then facing the opposite way, sleeping peacefully. He was a very mellow dog. In the morning he was still in that position and still, of course. But he didn't perk when I got up. I went over to him and realized he had died. Best dog I ever had. My boy gave him a very common name, but no name known could have fit him better

Very sad, so sorry for your loss. Knowing that you did what's best for him doesn't make it any easier. I am dreading the day when I'll face the same decision.

My heart breaks for you....it's always a tough decision but it's the right one
We had the same thing 2 weeks ago with a little Yorkie we had for 16 years
The older I get the more attached I get to my dogs and the harder it is when their short lives are over.

Re: Lost my little buddy today

Very sorry to hear. My daughter got a little Morkie just over four years ago and it has gone the way many dog purchases go. The little bugger is attached to me and I am to her. I've not had a dog in over 20 years and now I'm one of "those guys" headed to the vet with a 9 lb yapper on my lap.

It will be a rough day when that comes for me as I know it was for you.

Sorry for your loss. You might give him a whisper tonight to not be afraid of the golden retriever named Molly. She loves company and will welcome you and probably hug you too much but she means no harm. If your lucky, she will fetch you a beer. Oh, and tell her daddy said hi.

Re: Lost my little buddy today

Thank you all for the condolences.
This has hit my wife especially hard. Nacho was her dog when she was single. It was just him and her. She would take him to work and he would go on the roof and run steeplechase over the A/C ducts and bark at people on the street. When she would take him out people would call him "Roof Dog" He was kind of a local celebrity.

When I first started dating my wife Nacho hated me. He was very jealous. He was mommy's boy. Not me. and he didn't like it. He bit me more times than I can count. But in time that all changed. He would jump in my lap. I'd wake up with him sleeping on my head. (He liked to do that but only if he liked you). It took a while but I guess I finally passed the test and we were best friends.

I've got a million stories about Nacho. He went everywhere with us.

I was sitting at my desk this morning. I kept looking down because he always sat under me. But there was nothing there.

Re: Lost my little buddy today

It's never easy but when they are in pain and suffering it's hard but right thing to do.
We've had hunting dogs for 40 plus years and after spending many hours in the field with them it's hard to take them out of the hunting line up and then take them to vet and say goodbye. I'm suppose to be the big tough guy of the family and it always made me a big cry baby when it was time to take them to the vet. We have some great videos of duck, goose and pheasant retrieves that I took and every once and awhile I pull them up. They always puts a smile on my face.
We have found that finding another dog fairly soon helps take your mind off the old dog. Hard to think about the old dog when you are potty and obedience training the new pup or maybe a pound dog?

I’ve had horses and dogs my whole life and it’s always tough when you have to put one down.I know what your going through. But when they are miserable and not going to get better you can’t let them suffer any longer. The only thing you can do is give them a good death.

Hey Paul, just wanted to say sorry for your loss.

We lost our little girl a couple years after our first kid was born. She's almost 10 now, and we just haven't been able to find another dog we were immediately drawn too.

Paul, sorry for your loss. It really sucks especially watching the ones you love suffer.
My wife's baby is our 16 year old cat Smokey that we have to give fluids to intravenously every day. We both know he is on borrowed time. He doesn't complain and he doesn't fight it. When he does that will be the time.
Be well..
