Speedometer Cable

Can anyone with a properly working speedometer measure the length of the end of the speedometer cable that goes into the speedo? I have a CPP speedo and an aftermarket speedometer cable from amazon and I have a little bit of wobble and I suspect the wobble is from the speedo cable going to far into the speedo and binding (my last cable got bent on the speedo side). I can trim it but not sure how long it's supposed to be.

Re: Speedometer Cable

The cable goes into the gear a long ways. Right to the end if needed. Gear is over 2 inches long. Likely not your problem.
Likely dried grease makes the cable sticky.
Pull the cable out and clean it off completely. Then put it back in with a dab of lithium grease.

Re: Speedometer Cable

This is why I thought it was going in too far

Re: Speedometer Cable

That’s looking ugly.
Pull the gear out of the bullet and see how well the cable slides inside.

Re: Speedometer Cable

OP - that is the speedo end of the cable in your picture, not the transmission end correct?

I think Geezer is talking about the trans end.

I am going through a similar thing with mine but have a stock speedo with aftermarket cable from Orielly. Needle jumps and occasional makes chirping sound at the speedometer. I pulled the drive cable from the sheath and lubed it but it made no difference. After searching on the forum I found a thread where a member clipped about 1/4” off of the drive cable and it fixed his problem. I tried that, no more chirp but the needle is still bouncy at some speeds. So I’m still figuring it out. Sorry I don’t know what the correct length from the crimped ferrule to the end of the cable should be.

Also verify the routing of the speedo cable to make sure there are no kinks or sharp bends.

Good luck and let us know what you figure out.

Re: Speedometer Cable

Yeah that's correct, it's the speedo end of the cable, not transfer case end

Re: Speedometer Cable

Ooops!
If you check the length on the cables in this link, then yours is definitely long.

Re: Speedometer Cable

I unscrewed the cable and pulled it out of the speedo a bit and the needle is solid, going to try cutting half an inch off like suggested thx

Re: Speedometer Cable

The inner cable on my truck sticks out 3/8" with the threaded sleeve pushed all the way back. The little flange on the inner cable is positioned all the way back inside the housing end. It may be that there is something preventing the transmission end of your cable from sliding all the way into the transmission gear.

I have an original speedo cable I'm willing to sell. PM me if you're interested.
