1968 GMC stock leaf springs

I recently purchased a 1968 GMC C1500 ½ ton truck. I’m in the process of replacing the bed wood and after removing the wood and strips I noticed that there are eight leaves on each side of the rear end leaf springs. Is this the normal setup for a ½ ton? The truck rides incredibly rough.

Re: 1968 GMC stock leaf springs

I have a custom camper and mine only has 5 but a lot of people who post about removing leafs say they have 8 or 9

Re: 1968 GMC stock leaf springs

disassemble them and you may notice alot of rust between the leaves. grind and polish off the surface rust but dont go too deep. then slather on a coating of grease, I use Mobile one. between the leaves and bolt them back together with new hardware.

if you got to grind too deep to remove rust, its best to get a new set of leaf springs and grease them up.

also if the leaves are new or used, de burr the ends so they dont dig in to the metal of the leaves above them

make sure shocks are correct. some may be too stiff

I have done this to every leaf spring set up I've owned and the change is dramatic. firm but nice ride especialy when the spring pacs are new.

I wolud almost recomend you start with new ones
