Re: Did you start out driving a Stick Shift?
I generally prefer a stick shift over an automatic...but automatics are very nice in traffic.
My Dad always believed that the only good automatics were in American made vehicles but I disagree these days because the automatic in my wife's Toyota is really nice.

The automatic transmission was invented in 1921 by Alfred Horner Munro of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada (good for him) Since then, they have improved 1000 %

Re: Did you start out driving a Stick Shift?
My wife (girlfriend at the time) actually taught me how to drive a manual in a '95 Jetta. I knew in theory how to, but before I met her I hadn't actually had the chance to drive one. Her dad taught her, and the only thing she has ever driven was a manual. We joke that I taught her how to drive an automatic! In my old automatic Malibu, it did not have a gear indicator and every time she drove it, she would have to ask for a reminder on how many down was Drive. Now, both of our dailies are manuals and the C10 is our only automatic simply because the truck was too nice to pass up and it still had its original powerglide in it.

Re: Did you start out driving a Stick Shift?
lol, lots of good stories..
and don't be ashamed of not knowing how to drive a manual, I've known lots of men that can't, even some that claim they can I showed a young gal how to run a manual in this a few years back.. buddy of mine's son's girlfriend wanted to learn and we all agreed the isuzinator was up to the task for a beginner.. 300+hp on soft ground was a fair match for a teenage girl, only managed to actually stall a couple of times.. thank goodness for five point harness or I'd probably lost my grill, lol.. so despite her nervous pedal work, she got the hang of it quickly and in no time zooming around the desert with a big grin.. |

Re: Did you start out driving a Stick Shift?
First car was a 71ish Mazda RX2 on a stick. One of the coolest cars on Earth IMO. I was terrible. I recall more than a few attempts uphill, just to get out of a parking lot. Had trouble understanding how to drive downhill as well. Once I figured it out I was terror on wheels. That is, until I flipped it.
That little car would do 140-145, even at night, cough! Mine looked like the first image. Had to show the rear end and interior too. The interior is beautiful. Wish I still had it.

Re: Did you start out driving a Stick Shift?
I learned to drive standard on these vehicles: dodge rampage, chevette, 80's silverado (three on the tree) and a '92 Silverado 5 speed.

Re: Did you start out driving a Stick Shift?
Started in my Dad's 1950 Chevy 2ton farm truck with a "granny grunt" four speed. Drove that thing all over the area hauling hay for $0.11 per bale. Gosh, was I making money!

Re: Did you start out driving a Stick Shift?
Finally found a decent photo.
Dad's '62 Ranchero, now mine after 20+ years of nagging him to sell it to me. First thing I did was swap out the exhausted 170 and *tiny* non-synchro-first-gear gearbox for a 200 and later-better-synchro gearbox.

Re: Did you start out driving a Stick Shift?
1st stick car driven was Dads 58 Beetle.
Didn't go well, but both the garage door and the VW bumper lived. LOL Really learned on Dads 76 Mazda (think Courier) PU. It had chrome reverse with baby moons and Torque Twisters.

Re: Did you start out driving a Stick Shift?
I was about 13 and was working with the county road crew during the summer and my job was laying pipe (storm drains ) with an old fellow who liked to drink and whore around on the job .We worked out of an old 49 Dodge dumptruck with a trailer out back with a backhoe on it .He had a few too many beers and decided it was better for me to drive .That was a hell of an adventure but I did OK considering the transmission wanted up in the seat with me ,it had broken mounts .My Mom just about Shat a brick when I told her about it years later .

Re: Did you start out driving a Stick Shift?
I learned to drive a stick on a 1974 Austin Marina built by British Leylands. My dad took me out once, had no patience with me, so I never drove with him again while I was learning. He was a truck driver and had high expectations... I did learn from him, but by watching! Lol
On my 69 K20 I had in the 80's, the pivot ball that threads into the block broke, I drove about 40 miles to my girl friends grandmas with no clutch, it was actually fun, evene going through the traffic lights in town, timing them just right. Called the Chevy dealer, they had the part, drove down to get it and fixed it. I learned to shift with no clutch by watching my dad. |

Re: Did you start out driving a Stick Shift?
Didn't learn a stick shift until I was about 17. Dad always had automatics. Said he had had enough of pushing a clutch years before and NEVER owned one I could remember. First car I recall was Mom & Dad had a '52 Buick Roadmaster with a Dyna-flow transmission. Man, that thing was a tank. Remember sleeping in the back window when taking trips. Try that today, huh, LOL
Buddy of mine bought a '65 Mustang, 289, 4 speed when I was a junior in HS and he taught me. Have had many stick shifts since then. '69 Mach One 351 4 spd, 65 Impala SS 327 4 spd, '72 Blazer 4spd, 72 1/2 ton 4 spd, my '71 K10 was a 4 spd when I first got it. Arthur and bad knees changed that to a 350TH couple years ago. Still miss the 4 spd. Only have two 4 speeds now days. One is my FIL's Ford 8N tractor he gave me years ago before he passed when he quit farming. l sure miss that man, treated me like his own son. Lots of wisdom and a WW2 vet. The other one is my '57 Chevy 210 sedan, 283 w/ dual WCFB carbs and Muncie 4 spd. THAT ONE STAYS A 4 SPEED !! Gotta have something to bang gears in on occasion. Haven't had it out for some time now, need to change that for sure.

Re: Did you start out driving a Stick Shift?
The first thing I drove on the street was an old forklift (1940’s or 50’s, obviously a stick shift). After figuring out how to shift smoothly, and how to steer backwards, learning to drive a car was a breeze!
