Re: Attempt/Mistake #2

So I went to pick up my frame after telling the body shop to not worry about touching it again since obviously they cannot follow instructions and that I would just do it myself the way that I wanted it done originally. Had resigned myself to possibly using the primer that was on it but when I got there to pick it up it was sitting outside (and it rained last week several times). The primer job that was on there was super half a$$ed and the pictures speak for themselves. I am definitely going to re blast it. Needless to say I didn't give him one single cent and I still feel screwed.

Re: Attempt/Mistake #2

Since I have to re blast it anyways I figured that I would notch the passenger frame rail because my headers come REALLY close and do not want them to rattle. Took a half inch sliver out of the bottom and then welded it all in. Do not have a finished picture unfortunately.

Re: Attempt/Mistake #2

Finally got over to my friends house and he is machining my crank pulley so it fits. As you will recall from earlier post I got this pulley from a 1994 BBC truck and the crank and balancer are slightly different. Here it is in the lathe. Runs absolutely perfectly straight. Aaaaaand took too big of a bite and the pulley ended up on the floor. Didn't get it quite totally finished yet.

Re: Attempt/Mistake #2

Trying to make lemonade out of lemons. So since I am blasting frame again anyways I decided that I was going to POR 15 the INSIDE of the frame via all the holes that I have drilled in the rails. My thinking is that since I am blasting the outside anyways whatever sand gets in and strips that portion of POR 15 the epoxy that I am spraying on the outside will cover that then bare metal. The reason I don't want to spray straight epoxy into the rails is that even the sand blaster didn't remove all the rust out of them (and unlike POR 15 manufacturor SPI makes no claim to being able to put over rust). So I followed the prep to the letter, ran my two air driers on my compressor so I had totally dry air. Then I fogged POR 15 into every hole on the frame. It looks like I got pretty good coverage. I had previously put screws into the holes that I tapped for my brake lines and rear wiring harness (so as to not mess up the threads when blasting). Pulled these screws out after spraying interior of rails and all the threads had a good coating of POR 15. (the screws that do not have any paint on them were blind tapped).

Damn At least you didn't pay and seems like starting over is
the better choice. Sitting outside in the rain, wow. Why don't you just
POR15 the whole thing? Are you planing on coloring the frame?

Re: Attempt/Mistake #2

Something else worth mentioning, if that was the same DuPont etch primer that
I had used, it wasn't the right color. Mine was/is a mustard color, yours is grey. hmm

Cool idea using the Por-15 inside the frame. I'm glad to hear you didn't have to pay the guy for that primer job.

Re: Attempt/Mistake #2

litew8 you are right! I never even thought about that but on other things that I have Variprimed they were that yellow also. I have a yellow tailgate in my shop as we speak. In earlier post I talked about why I didn't want to POR the outside of it. It may be just me but I can never get it to stick on blasted metal. Even when I use the right steps it does not seem to work just right. I think that in the past my main problem has been dry air which I have since rectified though. The biggest reason I did not want it on the outside is the difficulty in touching up. I tried to touch it up in the past and can never get the color to match and it peels off on me. Like I said it may be just me. Also I am planning on painting every single thing that is going to be black on the entire vehicle (every bolt, bracket) with the exact same paint. What I am planning on using is Pro Spray (some English paint company that SPI recommended) single stage urethane. The color is Jet Black. Except the trailing arms, control arms, brake calipers, and engine block will be Pro Spray SS urethane Hugger Orange.

Re: Attempt/Mistake #2

Yea but such is life! I got the frame blasted today again. Cannot seem to load pictures right now for some reason. Will as soon as I can. It turned out even better this time than last. The POR 15 inside the rails stuck beautifully.

Re: Attempt/Mistake #2

I realized that my front sway bar bracket is supposed to bolt through where these rivets hold the very front crossmember in place. You are supposed to grind the rivets out and replace with bolts. Unfortunately I have welded this all in as solid as the Rock of Gibraltar. No problem as long as you have access to a magnetic drill press! Ground head of rivets off then drilled through the center of them and will tap them (the remains of the rivet) for a 3/8 bolt.

Re: Attempt/Mistake #2

Few other miscellaneous things: Thought some of you all might like to see my other 72. It is from my great aunt in Oklahoma. 28,000 miles and numbers matching. Also here is my air drier set up. It is a 30 gallon accumulator tank that has a 20 foot loop of 1/2 inch aluminum tubing coiled inside a 5 gallon bucket of ice and water. This goes into a 40 micron filter which separates almost everything. Whatever is not is caught by the deVilbiss QC3 Camair. Also one of my friends sold me this billet gauge bezel for Auto Meter gauges for a song

Re: Attempt/Mistake #2

Almost forgot the picture of POR 15 in the rails. Also I got the 535 running on the engine stand. If I can figure out how to attach video of it running I will. The irritating tick that it had is gone with my new headers. So I am hoping that it was just an exhaust leak

Very nice progress on the frame. nice recovery from the setback. I like the air drier. That's a good idea. I may just do the same when I get ready to do some more blasting. Keep up the hard work.

I got the idea from "the astronaut" on here. He has the bucket of water in a dorm fridge. I am going to do that too but just have not had time to rig it up yet. It works super well though. Paint is going on first thing in the morning!!

We had a refrigeration unit on our old air system at work. It worked really good until we got past the CFM usage rating. Now we have a self cleaning descicant system that works great.

Hey nice Okie truck btw! I really like those survivors.

Re: Attempt/Mistake #2

Haha, yea all my family and old friends still do dirt construction and construction work so I have access to a lot of big and specialty machinery that can be super useful. Wait till you see what is going to happen tomorrow! Some things that I guarantee you have never seen before! May only work in theory but we shall see. Thanks for looking btw, really helps keep a guy motivated.

Very cool. The attention to detail you're giving - it should turn out really nice.

Re: Attempt/Mistake #2

Just got done priming EVERYTHING. I would not recommend boxing a frame to anyone as it makes it very very difficult to turn the frame and get great coverage btw. I got several runs that I am sanding out in the morning and then shooting my single stage paint. Will post pictures tomorrow.

Nice, sounds like you've been busy. I think I read that POR-15 is for slightly rusty surfaces, could be why you couldn't get it to stick good.

Re: Attempt/Mistake #2

Pics! So the thought is that since I did not have the luxury of a paint booth that we would hang the frame from the boom truck and would raise it when we were done to keep dust off. I have noticed that dust seems to stay close to the floor, because of the weight of it I am guessing. These were the other parts that we tried to paint at same time. Would not try to paint other small parts when was doing some large project again. This is my brother spraying. (would not recommend just using a N95 mask like this and will not do that again). Here are primer pictures. The blasted metal soaked up the epoxy big time the first pass.
