Ok i recently got a 350, enginge put in my truck and now i want a better tranny. Right now i got an automatic, gowerglide

. I want to go to a manual and i hear alot of guys got a 350 tranny. Is this a manual right? is it a good one or what? and how many gears is it? If u guys wouldnt go with the 350 what tranny would u go with and y? thanks fellas

What you hear referred to as a "350" is a GM Turbo-Hydramatic 350, or TH 350, and it is a 3 speed automatic transmission, with 3rd gear being direct drive. People like them because they are common, cheap, and easy to build up..... basically the same reasons to like a 350 engine. If it's a manual you're looking for though, the TH350 is not for you.

Isn't it a possibility that the TH350 bolts in place of a PG? Meaning, the drive shaft is good-to-go? Also, a TH350 has better ratios than the TH400 (which I have). I remember that my sons' truck had a 350, and it was much peppier than my TH400.

The ratios are slightly different TH350 to TH400 but only slightly . The difference you felt was probably the fact that the TH350 uses quite a bit less power to operate than the TH400 does which frees up more power to push that big old pig down the road. It could have been other things though. Comparing trucks is difficult unless EVERYTHING else is the same.

The standard manual tranny for our trucks is an SM465 4 speed. GM stuck it in pickups from 1968 or so until the mid 80s or later. It's nearly bulletproof and easy to find. The other common 4 speed you'll find is an SM420. It's older, with the reverse down and to the left, instead of to the right and down, like the 465.

although the Powerglide is sort of an odd automatic transmission because it has only two speeds, it is still a good transmission, and racers like them.
