Re: 97 sierra ext cab build
Here you go with it running in my driveway. It's a single chamber wannabe flowmaster single in single out. It was like this when I bought the truck. I do have plans for moving the tip to a different location and adding a cat and shorty headers to it.

Re: 97 sierra ext cab build
It's not that loud unless you step on it. It's basically a knock off of a single chamber flowmaster. Best of all it's cheap!
Matter of fact I have one in my garage with single 3 inch inlet and dual 2.25 ( I think) outlets. I may sell it. It was only my 2011 Dodge Ram Hemi for about 4500 miles.

Re: 97 sierra ext cab build
Sounds good, almost like my 88 i had, with over 250k and a single in dual out flow 40 series, the only difference really was the motor was so worn out my idle sounded a lot slower...lol

Re: 97 sierra ext cab build
Well I've been busy, but not so much on the truck, wife's washer went out so I had to fork that money up. I did get three wheel primered today. Tomorrow I hoping to get them painted, the forth will be ready to paint Monday.
Does anybody know the correct screw size that fits the center cap? Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 97 sierra ext cab build
So I finally got the wheels painted, they look great, really smooth finish. Ill order the front tires soon and then ill get exhaust from the y pipe back, that way all I have to get would be the headers. I can put those on my self...
Iv'e changed my mind (again) on the drop, I'm going to have to go with 2-4, I just don't have the time to notch the frame right now. Plus with a urge to race more, I might be pulling a trailer often. |

Re: 97 sierra ext cab build
I would not keep the factory Y pipe. You should use small tube diameter long tube headers if you can. 1.75 inch tube will flow nice. Or you can use a set of intermediate length headers. The 1.5 inch tubing lends some extra space.
I am in the process of redoing my exhaust right now. I had bought a set of long tube headers but they won't fit the truck right cause at some point this thing was in an accident and things just don't line up on the passenger side quite right. I think it's due to the engine mount. Anyway the smaller tube works well to add some torque to the program. I have a thread going on my exhaust system on here now and will update it as I progress this weekend.

Re: 97 sierra ext cab build
On my 98 extended cab I have the entire exhaust stock up until the muffler. There I cut the stock one out, had them weld in a dual 2 1/4" in/single 3" out flowmaster 50 series truck+suv, and put a dump directly on the exit. It has a great rumble at startup, you can always hear it slightly, it isen't super loud at full throttle like a 40 series, and doesn't drone at all. Its perfect for a cruiser.

Re: 97 sierra ext cab build
That's sounds like a good idea, however I like a full exhaust job, for some reason it's had a certain sound that you can't replicate by a cat back system, but the 50 series could be an option.
Update on my wheels, I seem to still have a problem with chipping, for some reason even tho they look fantastic, they are very easily chipped, I guess my next option is to have a pro paint them? Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 97 sierra ext cab build
I used high temp ceramic engine paint. Worked like a charm. Doesn't come off. Either that or you can have them powder coated.
Here is a pic of wheels I painted with engine paint. First pic is when I had just finished them the second one is after around 10K miles of use.

Re: 97 sierra ext cab build
No primer just washed them really well then sanded the clearcoat with some fine grit sandpaper then washed them again. Then paint.

Re: 97 sierra ext cab build
Huh, I sandblasted, sanded, washed, primer, sanded primer, washed, then paint...a whole lot more work and mine chipped, kinda aggravating. Well I guess I'll blast them again and try just paint to steel

Re: 97 sierra ext cab build
Well it looks like ill be getting some painting done soon, i got a quote to paint the wheels and it 35-40 a wheel, not bad for professional work so im go with it. I have however decided to change colors, as the more i look around town the more i see black rally wheels, gotta be different, so maybe red, or a super metallic silver. Silver might look the best.
I changed my oil last night and noticed something that made me like my truck just that much more, the undercarriage is super clean, no mud or dirt anywhere. All the exhaust is still silver, no rust and the motor is also very clean. I'm used to knocking off mud and caked on dirt/oil mixed and compacted to the oil pan, but not here. I get to work on a truck that not going to get me cover in that crap.... |

Re: 97 sierra ext cab build
Well its been a while and i finally have some extra money...i bought the 255/70's (general grabber hts) a while back and now i can buy my fronts, i'm going with 235/70's, there a bit more subtle of a tire size change from front to back. i figure on a ext cab it will look better.
i still haven't repainted the wheels, so that will be next. black, red or silver??? that the question... |

Re: 97 sierra ext cab build
Well it's been a long road so far, and finally I have finished these dang wheels, I changed colors to silver just because I'm not sure what color to paint the truck yet. I can always sand and paint them later... here is a pic.
Soon I'm going to start on the drop, and will most likely be going 4/2. Hopefully it won't take me as long as these wheels did! what do you guy think so far? |

Re: 97 sierra ext cab build
Looks good, I've always liked the rally wheels even though they aren't as flashy as some other wheels, they just have a classic muscle car look to them.
Any thought on removing the black rubber side trim? It's a couple hours worth of work but makes the truck look so much cleaner.

Re: 97 sierra ext cab build
I have thought about it, i think ill keep the trim on the bumpers, but the rest will go, and i need a new bed anyway, i have a dent from a blow out i think.
Any suggestion on painting the truck, colors, two tone? |

Re: 97 sierra ext cab build
Well so far I am really happy with the tire choice, they look great and ride smooth. Its a huge improvement from the two bald rears, and A/T Wranglers on front.
I have a question about exhaust. Does anybody know what stock pipe size is from the cats back? Looks like 2.25. From what I can find, flowmasters don't come in anything under 2.5. I think Ill need a dual in single out also. |
