Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2

With any luck, I just put the last smudge of plastic skim on the truck and have reached the point of diminishing returns on the body work. Sand out the silver dollar spot to night and in a couple of days when temps get lower will shoot two more coats sanding primer and block it for the final time. In between undercoating the bed fenders on the road exposed sides. next get to take 40 years of paint and rust off the wheel, oh joy...

Went to the American Graffit festival show in Modesto. Sat., me and my youngest daughter. Sun., w/ my 15yr old nephew. He's getting ready to start working on his dad's 70 Dart but for some reason we kept looking at GM A bodies...

Good show over all. Sorry no pics. phone died. But by in large, a good wknd to spend w/family.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2

Finally got my Pertronix distributor and coil installed. I'm still recovering from cancer that has weakened my back so got my son to come over and do it while I watched. We took a short cut and just numbered the wires clockwise starting at number one to make it more easy than trying to trace the wires out since they go down and under the exhaust manifolds. It started right up and I only had to tweak the timing slightly when we got it done.

Love it when a plan works out. Good luck on your recovery, I missed you had the cancer.

Love those Pertronix modules! Simple to install under cap, reliable to run, and HEI spark when paired with a hot coil.

Got my steering wheel finished and installed! Photos to come.

This weekend my '50 will take me to a hot rod lunch at the local city park.

Oops, 30 minutes expired; too late to edit the above. Here are photos of my new steering wheel. It came with a 4-inch dish - too deep, too close to my stomach, so I cut the spokes, flattened out the dish, removed the excess metal, re-welded in stainless, and ground smooth. Now I love the way it looks and feels.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2

cleaned it up and taped so i can hit it with a couple of coats sanding primer. Decided I have hit the wall on "working on it" and going to put in the glass and start driving it while I do the final blocking. Want to shake it down mechanically before final paint.

Getting closer to my chassis being done and ready to swap in the burb. Finished up the mustang II, fab'd up a crossmember and boxed the chassis foe the new crossmember (chassis was rusted out where the orginal mid crossmember was in the drivers side.) Unfortunately i cant find my pic of the rusted section be for I welded in thw patch but am still looking . Just need to flip the chassis for the finish welding then it's ready to mockup and paint.

Getting ready for the 4 link and the 8.8 rear end.
Coil overs should be here in the morning.
Going to center the axle in the rear fenders a little better.
When I put the bed on for the first time, the stock s10 axle was too far back.

Got this cool sign from Pep Boys. Had to order online, none here, its on ebay for cheaper than PB web site. My truck was originally that color.

I have a similar sign on my garage wall that I picked up at PB. Mine is just the truck without the "Chevy" part. My truck is a 57 so not exactly like the sign, but same color and close enough that I had to buy that sign when I spotted it.

Dropped Project Mayhem off to get back-halfed to fit the massive Intro Rally for the rear. They are also chopping the camaro clip off and building new front half of frame, rack and pinion steering, setting up airride setup the list goes on. I am like a kid at Christmas time I can't wait. I mocked one fender on the back to get the visual of how the rear will sit.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2

looks pretty sweet there heavy. would it have been a stretch to just fab a whole new custom frame? it seems like the only stock part is the middle, and it is pretty flat, so fairly easy to replace with fresh, right?
keep the pics coming, we are all junkies for the build that is moving forward.

Fitted a straight exhaust extension to get rid of the side exit that was blowing soot all over my (unpainted at present) wall when warming up!

Using this photo to get creative in Paint.Net on a design for a custom rollpan / bumper setup as my truck had a tow hitch setup that was removed by the previous owner, so now looks a bit.. incomplete!

I originally went in to get the back half done. After we talked about what I was running for the heartbeat and with the air ride he took me to look at 55 belair they were doing a front clip on with rack and pinion and they talked me into with a ton of reason why it would be better than keeping the clip that was done on it. I was already on the fence because the clip was solid as a rock but looked like crap. After I looked at it the other day they said the same thing that the only stock part of the frame is the center and I should have just went with a new frame but they are going to box in the center also for strength.

Once I got the bed bolted together, slapped the signs in there temporarily to get the look I'm going for. ...

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2

I finished up all my welding today and the chassis is nearly done.. At the point of mockup then it's finally sanding then paint. A small set back today as I lost my instructions to the leaf spring conversion. Small detail but it is an older chassis engineering kit and is complicated being it's a 54-55.1 kit I'm putting on a 53 chassis. I'll get it figured out but I blew it apart 4 yrs ago and a movery so it's frustrating.
