Re: what plant is the "O" in vin number?

"O" in the VIN on a 1960 is for the Oakland, CA assembly plant. 62 was the last year trucks were assembled at the Oakland plant, which is why it doesn't show up in many of the 60-66 VIN decoders. I also have an Oakland built 60, a C10.

Oakland was building cars and trucks till the spring of 63. the plant was built around 1917 and was known as Detroit west. goggle it, very interesting read.

I had the same challenge when I first started doing the research...my 61 is an Oakland truck.

And do take the time to Google the Oakland plant...it is a really, really interesting study!

Re: what plant is the "O" in vin number?

The Oakland assembly plant does make for interesting reading. It was the first Chevrolet/GM plant built outside of Detroit, and was originally known as the Durant Plant, after William C. Durant. I've always found it interesting that only the 1960 truck shop manual lists the Oakland plant in the VIN ID section, and not the 61 or 62 supplements. The Fremont assembly plant assumed all production in 63, which is now also closed.

I smell a good new topic for the forum here...would be an interesting one to say the least if there were pics, etc...

Re: what plant is the "O" in vin number?

Fremont built plants had an H as designation in 63 . Did not appear in the August 1, 1962 print date Data Book. Chevrolet would send updates of the pages as the year progressed. The dealerships would remove the old page and insert the new page from the binder. The 1964 Data book shares some of the pages from 1963 Data Book. The information didn't change on some information so they kept the pages that were still relevant and changed those that were not.
