Heavy half in '95???
i was talking to a guy who has a 95 chevy 2500. we were just bs'ing about the differences in my personal truck (84) and my '11 chevy (work truck). he said have you ever noticed a 6 lug 3/4 ton?? i said that is weird, i wonder if this was just a heavy half with a 2500 badge?... i look at the gvwr and it was only 7200. my work chevy has a GVWR of 7000. i know the new trucks typically have higher ratings, but is that a normal gvwr for a 2500 in 1995?

Re: Heavy half in '95???
Ya basicly the light 3/4ton is a half ton on roids. All gm did is take 3/4ton suspintion and a 3/4 axle and put it on a half. Now as far as i know gm put the 3/4 axle in with large 3:73 gears. They also keept the 4l60e or 700r4. I have not seen any with the 4l80e or th400 doesnt mean they didnt make it.

Re: Heavy half in '95???
if it has 3/4 ton axles, why is it six lug.I hope we can get a good explanation.just seems like theres no purpose for a "heavy half" or a "light" 3/4 ton.anyone?

Re: Heavy half in '95???
They had a semi floating 14 bolt rear, the 6 lug axles are due to the fact that all the front suspension/differential is standard half ton stuff. They had a considerably better springpack, and larger brakes.A really good package, actually, for a daily driver that sees regular towing/hauling duty.

Re: Heavy half in '95???
An actual 3/4 ton has a heavier frame. I have a '92 that is considered a heavy half with same frame as half ton only one more leaf in the spring, a 14 bolt rear end and stiffer front springs and 6 lug.

Re: Heavy half in '95???
a reason i can see is fuel mileage... but back then it wasnt as big of deal. it seems to me that it would help get the full power and torque, for towing instead of wasting it on the heavier frame. just my 2 cents

Re: Heavy half in '95???
Yes,15" wheels still fit.As far as bad fuel mileage goes,I had a 91 light 3/4,350 5 speed 3.73 gears. It had a 3" lift, and 33x12.50s,and consistantly 17mpg,not pulling.I put 170,000 on that truck and was and still to this day the most versatile truck I ever owned.

Re: Heavy half in '95???
I haven't had a truck get that good since,I personally blame the ethanol content in today's fuel.

Re: Heavy half in '95???
There is an actual heavy half pick up from 88-98, If you have a 1/2 ton truck with an f44 option, it's a heavy 1/2ton. I believe it was a 1/2 ton truck with a 5 bolt sf14 (in 2wd ofcoarse, 6 if 4x4) beefier springpack (not quite 3/4tin springs), g80 was standard and 3.73 or 4.10 gears. Then GM also made two 3/4 tons with two different gvw, mostly because then they covered a wider range of options. If you needed to pull something everyday you got the heavier 3/4 ton or stepped into a 1 ton depending on the trailers weight. If it was only once and a while, then you had the option of the light 3/4 or f44, the light 3/4 had better breaks then the f44 I beleive. Ride quality and comfort was different in each truck. Remember, there was a time when GM had the best option lists out there. It is just a way of covering a broader spectum in the truck market, so people didn't have to go buy a 3/4 ton or higher truck just to pull their camper three times a year, but during the rest of the year suffer throu stiff suspension and hard fuel economy.
