Amazing how fast you got the chassis done and motor running. It took me a solid year. As soon as fishing weather hits I usually stop or slow to crawl. I'm going to try to stay hooked up this year just to try to keep up with you

Thanks Mike.. As I have said before... My progress is about to slow way down... I need to start on the cab next week, but I keep looking around for other things to work on You made that rust on your cab disappear pretty fast.. and made it look easy...

Nothing like an LS engine! After swapping in the 6.0 in my Camaro I would never look back at using the SBC. I will however use the SBC thats in my 72 truck since I really dont want to spend a great deal of money on another swap. Awesome you got the harness figured out and you have it running. I chose the path of least resistance and bought a stand alone harness for the Camaro. Great job and thanks again for all of the information!!!

The wiring was not bad.. in fact I enjoyed it.. Maybe someday I will start a business doing it.. Thanks for the commets.. I think my next project will be a 1st gen Camaro... Have a great day.

Update from last weekend.. Built a driver’s side battery box out of what I had on hand.. I am not super happy with it, but it is functionally, and does not look that bad. It did fit well, and is very stable.







I installed new radiator rubber support pieces and replaced the modified 2 core metal support pieces with 4 core ones.




After that I installed the new radiator support mounts.



Next I temporary wired up the engine harness and fuel pump.




Then I fired the engine up.. started instantly.. I used the Scan Gauge out of my Tundra to look for PCM codes and to monitor water temp, loop mode, and RPM.











Mounted the radiator





Sunday I stripped the old cab all the way down and moved it out of the shop … getting ready to bring the new cab in..







I had my lovely, wonderful, wife record the engine startup… Seems she could not keep the camera off of me.. Can’t say I blame her.. But she did get some pictures of it running. The audio is terrible on the cheap camera we were using the engine was much more quite than this video depicts.

Hey Mark, nice work on the battery box. It looks right at home to me. I'm digging the video too. I really want to know how to hook up one of those for my project(s). Keep up the hard work

Thanks Mike.. The welds need improvement.. The battery tray was rusted out in a coupe of places.. I patched those, but there is still some pitting. The PO used a 1973 - 80 battery tray.. it worked out well moved to the drivers sde.

What is it you want to know how to hook up?

Got the cab moved to the shop.. I will find a different method to unload cabs by myself in the future. The cab flipped 90 degrees on me.. it was not pretty.. but I finally got it back in the right position.

I tilted the cab up to start on the cleanup of the floor tomorrow.




I also position the LS1 fan setup into place.. I will also work on getting a mounting system setup tomorrow.

OUCH! That sucks, hope you didn't get tweaked in the tip over. Or make some new dents. Looking forward to the LS fan setup details.

There was some tweaking and some new dents.. but not a big... small problems compared to some... I loaded the old cab this morning in about 5 minutes..

Started out the day building a mount for the LS1 fans. I had some 1” by 1” angle aluminum that worked out really well.










I used one of the lower shourd clips on the bottom. I think it will work ok.. time will tell..







Then I worked on the wiring for the Fan and Relays…








Started it up and let it get up to temperature. The fan started somewhere around ~195-198~ on low speed and cooled the temperature down to ~191 for the fan shutoff. I will not be able to test the high speed setting until the ambient temperature gets higher and I am able to drive it. I did test it by taking the high speed wire to ground and it worked great.





Finally I started cleaning the bottom of the cab. While this cab has better cab supports.. the floor pans and lower parts of the firewall are worse. I will need to utilize some of the old cab pieces on this cab.

Good work on the fan mount Mark. You're gonna have to show me how you wired that setup. I'm assuming you are monitoring the engine temp with your scan tool.

That looks like some 1/8X1" aluminum angle. I have crap load of that stuff in a corner somewhere in my piled shop I would have been glad to give you some. Too bad that cab needs so much attention. I just got finished for the night on mine, it was a long battle. I'll give you a hand with if iI can.

Thanks Mike.. I have it all documented.. should not have any problems.. The fan setup works really nice, I am glad I went this way instead of the mechanical fan.
I had the angle piece laying around.. it worked out well.

No problem on the cab.. 40 year old stuff is going to have rust.. I am still debating on which cab to use.. And I will take all the help I can get… so if you every get bored and want to make a trip to Eufaula I will be there..

Started off the day by scraping the bottom of the cab..



After that I sandblasted the bottom of the cab…



If you want to find rusted out holes.. just fire up the sand blaster.. I found rusted out holes in places that looked perfect…








Got the cab back on the cradle..







Not sure where to go from here… Thinking about going back to the old cab.. the cab supports are rusted out, but there is less rust overall on my original cab compared to the new one.. Either way there is a lot of work to do… 

WOW! That thing sure looks different after you shot it with sand (black diamond). It all looks so familiar for some reason. It's really not too bad, it's just time consuming. I know I was really glad to get the cleaning stage that you did today done.

Well.. I have run out of mechanical things to fix.. So here I go on the cab repair…
Decided to start on the passenger side first.. That way if I don’t get it just right.. then I won’t have to look at it every time I get in the truck..

First step was to take some measurements and then start removing the rocker..






Lots of rust……











Started fitting the replacement panel





Thought I would see what the rocker would look like..



5 gallon bucket of sand in the passenger side rear support




Started fitting the cab corner… still lots of work to do here….





I got some co2/argon mix for the welder Saturday.. I bought a bottle instead of renting.. hope it was the right move.. Also picked up a roll of .030 solid wire.. But now I am wondering if I should use .024?

I cant say how much this thread is going to help me in the near future!!! Seems your truck and mine have the same issues in the cab. The .030" wire should be fine, the .024" would be better but I am sure you will find the sweet spot on wire speed. Keep the pics coming as I am sure there are a ton of us like you out there that will be doing the same fixes. Thanks!!!
