Found my K

Been around for a while on the 2wd side, been looking for a 4x4 for a while and drug this home last Tuesday night. 1972 K2500 4speed Sierra Grande. It's all there, not molested. It's a project, needs to be gone through...will keep updating with progress.

Re: Found my K

Disappointing to some, this truck did not start life as a 4x4. Upon inspection I discovered the VIN did not match and the SPID was tipped off the glove box door. I chose to buy it anyways as it was too nice to let sit in the PO's shop and rot.

I have had some time to crawl around under it and get it running. I have not run the frame #'s yet but it is a correct 71-72 4x4 frame with the Dana 44, sm465, np205 and what i think is a ho52 rear end.

The truck leans 1" lower to the driver side both front and rear. I believe it is in the springs after pulling some measurements. Is this common?

3934635 stamp on the rear axle. VO806TDJ stamp on front pad of the engine.

They are currently patina.... I don't think they were chrome, I saw remnants of black paint.

Re: Found my K

Looks like the paint is pretty decent, is it original? Any rust? Some people shy away from the converted 4x4's, to me it's not a big deal if done correctly. My 70 K2500 was a 4x4 conversion, they used the original body with a 4x4 frame and the K vin to match.

Right now the truck is a good 10 footer. Paint seems to be original, I don't know the history of the truck other than it was born and has lived in GA but the lack of rust in the cowl area tells me it was garaged / taken care of. The rockers were replaced a few years back, cab corners are all there but will need some attention. Front cup of the passenger fender is gone along with the core support on that side, other than that the truck is solid. The grill and chrome is all straight, needs a passenger eyebrow...door bottoms are solid and that's usually the deciding factor for me.

This was a straight forward body swap onto a '72 4x4 frame. The HO52 has a 1971 stamp on the 4:10 ring gear but the open knuckle Dana 44 may be a later model but I have not looked into that yet the tag reads 409.

The last week has been sorting out the brakes and finding parts. The passenger drum of the HO52 was empty except for the wheel cyl...driver side is all there so I can match parts. Apparently these brake parts aren't all that obsolete. I just bought the 11.154" brake pads off of Amazon (part #PAB248DR). Both Summit and Oreilly's carry the 1-1/8" bore wheel cyl (part #WC49680 & WC49681) and you can get the parking brake hardware kit from Oreillys. 11.154" Drums are still available from the above.

The truck runs and has good oil pressure but I havnt let it run for an extended period, it needs a windshield, bench seat cover and exhaust and it should be road time! Test and tune, it will be a driving project. Needs spring bushings all around and I found that it either has 2 different springs up front or one is badly worn. The passenger side has spring spacers between each leaf and the driver side has none. The truck sits to the driver sit 1" lower, I think a rebuild or new front springs will solve this.

Re: Found my K

Nice start for a project! Maybe you can get the moderators to move this thread into the 4X4 projects and builds section?
