Blazer tailgate window problem.

I have a 79 blazer, and i took the top off for the first time today. Well i when I put it back on, the back window won't roll up. It's a manual window, and the crank just spins freely. What do I do?

Re: Blazer tailgate window problem.

Turn the lock with the key. Thats the way you lock the rear of the blazer up. When locked the crank is disengauged from the regulator, so it just spins. This way with the window up the rear is essentially "locked" without needing any other locking mechanism.

I will say it was smart of you to lock it with the top off to keep anybody from rolling the window up on you and breaking it with the top off.

I'ts not locked. When I turn the lock with the key the whole tumbler just slides out. It's broke somewhere inside, and I need to get this window up.

Re: Blazer tailgate window problem.

Thats a problem. To get access to the lock/crank the window has to be up. Your best bet is to open the tailgate and pull the access panel. You will need to take the window off of the regulator. There are two slides that the window connects to the regulator (one per side). They do have bolts attaching them. With the window all the way down you should be able to get to the bolts without too much problem. With the window loose, you can slide it up/out of the gate. You can take the glass all the way out or just leave it in the gate as it will stay put (just be careful not to tweak it or run into it with anything as it will shatter). I left mine in, but was really carefull around it when I rebuilt my gate regulator.

At that point you should be able to get to the screws that hold the crank assembly on and remove it.

Here's a drawing from the shop manual with an exploded view so you know what you are looking at.

Re: Blazer tailgate window problem.

The cast handle broke inside, which sheared the prawl and bent the spring.

Re: Blazer tailgate window problem.

I bought a new pawl from GM, but was afraid the thing would brake again so I had my mom machine one from alluminum. Worked great until the regulator rusted off and the new handle came apart at the pivot.

Re: Blazer tailgate window problem.

Now i have another question. I got the new parts, but since I diddn't take it all apart (it took itself apart), how does the whole assembly go back together (key lock, spring, prawl, etc)?

Re: Blazer tailgate window problem.

If you inlarge the exploded diagram above you can get a pretty good idea. Thats how I did mine. I started with nothing. The local Gm dealer can print the diagram or parts of it too.

Re: Blazer tailgate window problem.

Hi. I have a similar issue. Purchased new lock cylinder, prawl, and spring. It's unclear from the diagram how the spring and pawl mate up to the clutch housing. Seems as though if I put it in the wrong way it could fall into a cavity.
